Seems like a low marking, but it really isn't.. the film was entertaining, it just wasn't superb or mindblowing or anything, just.. well.. good.
Wifey and I just watched it together and it was ok, very gritty and with some above-average performances from the cast. The music was haunting and the visuals were excellent, though while it was a gory film, thankfully () most of the true gruesome stuff was artfully shot just off-camera. Sean Bean plays a powerful role, as ever, and a great supporting role from - relatively unknown - Eddie Redmayne. Be warned though; it's a VERY "spiritual" film and it doesn't gloss over the fact that middle-ages Christianity was fucking BRUTAL ... every bit as brutal as the "savage" Pagans were made out to be.
Kind of a "Ho hum... that was it?" ending, but a satisfying film overall. Just don't expect an Oscar nominee any time soon

An outstanding, intriguing and gripping psychological thriller which manages to mix some of the most preeminent traits from Memento and Fight Club with a terrific performance by Christian Bale. Recommended.
I really wanted to like this... i mean its supposed to be a straight-up fighting tournament movie, and THESE CAN WORK! i know for a fact these types of films can not only work, but be fucking amazing, so im justified in having atleast SOME hopes in this. As i started watching, it had that kinda independent b-movie feel i actually LIKE... the kind that usually flies under the radar that are like a little jewel you find while sifting through the usual endless crappy tv-movie or stv crap that are usually discovered by accident.
And yeah its got the usual bad film-making issues these movies have... where they feel like the product of a first-time director (bad scene set-up, flow issues, poor usage of filming techniques, bad cuts, bad camera work, bad lighting, unnecessary scenes, etc..) - dialog is pretty standard, by which i mean bad, though atleast its not insultingly bad... i cant fault the movie for the character design though, but atleast they weren't annoying to me, which goes a long way as far as im concerned (annoying characters kill movies for me)
BUT ALL THIS CAN BE FORGIVEN IF THE ACTION IS GOOD, RIGHT?! i mean in an action film, if the ACTION kicks ass, then we can handle the cheese and the dialog and the amateurish nature of the production... well unfortunately the action isnt great. its generally poorly shot, the fights are short, and the choreography is nothing special. The fights are utterly unsatisfactory, and this - to me - is why the film sucks. Its a fight film with bad fights.
What points the movie gets for featuring the fucking epic Lateef Crowder in it, immediately get taken away for putting him in a shitty fight that doesnt even really showcase what the man can do
Also massive points removed for what is essentially a cardinal sin... having luke goss in it AND NOT EVEN HAVING HIM FIGHT! Hes a cool actor so its great to have him in it, BUT FUCKS SAKE its like having chuck norris in a movie as a nerdy scientist who spends the entire movie doing nothing but... talking...
So there we have it... another utterly disappointing video game movie. One or two cool action sequences, but SO fucking unsatisfying its sad.
I gave it a 4/10 for atleast having some minimum entertainment in it... the current 7.5 IMDB score is fucking laughable, but we've had this shit before with that shitfest resident evil CGI movie... it just boggles the mind that, even taking into account nostalgia and fanboy'ism, that fans can even find this film THAT good...

I also lol at people who say the dialog was the best they've seen in years.
Movie's good. yes. But don't hold it on a pedal stool.
The production values are not as good (obviously) but it has not butchered Adam's work

I thought film was funny and good until I read the books (still haven't finished last two). The books are soo much better than film, I really recommend to read them, or get yourself audiobooks ^^
