Posted: Thu, 3rd Jun 2010 16:02 Post subject: [Wii] Buying Wii Today, need help hax0ring |
|
 |
Ok, so I'm going to best buy today during lunch to pick myself up one of those sexy black wii's.
Few questions:
- How hard is it to setup for playing backups?
- Can I load backups onto my SD card and play them from there?
- Modchip or softmod is a better solution?
Did some searching online about modding the wii, but everything seems very complicated to do, and there's a ton a mods I came across so I'm not sure what the best solution would be for me.
If anyone could give me some links to guides/tutorials (if allowed), that would be awesome.

Black Wii and most any Wii since after Summer 2009 carry a modified DVD reader firmware which makes it impossible to read backup discs, fortunately soft modding works with the latest 4.2 Wii firmware both US and EU and either a SD card or a SDHC card though a external USB DVD reader will also work from what I've read.
First would be to get Homebrew channel installed via Hackmii or Bootmii, after that you can get Priiloader, AnyTitleDeleter, DopMii and WadManager installer to more advanced manage your Wii's IOS system components.
Waninkoko Rev 19 and Custom Ios 5.b are recommended (New functions and not very buggy either.) though contain a few bugs still and have a variety of ways to install them so reading a guide is usually helpful (There's a few useful ones on GBATemp for example on how to use both these so called cIOS together.)
USB loaders also differ a bit, I use, GX Loader, CFG loader, ULoader and Neo Gamma R9b12 at the moment set up in a few different ways depending on title requirements and what settings are preferred or works best.
(Again it's easiest to refer to guides on this, it's not very difficult but it's a lot to read up on more advanced things like FAT compatibility, WBFS file system, WBF ISO files and lately even NTFS compatibility plus general game protections and what settings work and what they do, I'm very bad at explaining though so it might seem more complex than it is.)
Can't say much about modchips but there are apparently a few good alternatives there as well with updatable settings and more to handle recent games and Wii firmwares.
(For USB disc management I also use WBFS Manager 3.5b1 and WBFS Java Manager beta though the latter I only added recently so I haven't done much with it.)

Yeah thanks to easy to follow guides and other tutorials it's very easy to get started, some are a bit dated though and refer to older loaders and utilities though on the other hand those might be more stable than the more recent stuff available though maybe not as compatible.
(FAT32 file format is rather helpful for example as it allows the HDD to be used as normal whereas a WBFS system would only work via managers to transfer files and the Wii itself.)

Yeh but only some loaders allow for booting games from FAT32.
JBeckman pointed out a loader called "Configurable USB Loader". Get that and you'll be laughing.
(not sure if it supports games from a FAT32 drive though)

thanks guys,
I'm planning on getting an SDHC card today as well, is there any difference between the SD card and the USB Loader, other than the price of purchase.
Jbeckham, that already sound confusing to me man.
This is what I understood:
- Find a homebrew channel
- Get bootmii or hackmii
- Install homebrew channel via bootmii or hackmii
- Install Priiloader, AnyTitleDeleter, DopMii or WadManager
- Install Waninkoko Rev 19 or Custom Ios 5.b
^ and these are options for the SD card?
Shit man, I'm already lost, gonna start looking for a step by step guide.
*edit*
Thnx horror, gonna start reading that now.

If there is any visual difference from SCART over composite, I've never seen it... heh. As for the HDD; make sure you check online first! Don't just pick up any normal HDD and think "Weeee, this is going to be brilliant!" because the Wii is extremely picky about what drives it can and can't use.
http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Index.php/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List
I came *this* close to buying an Iomega 320GB in the store, but luckily I remembered about the compatibility and checked online using an instore net terminal. It wasn't compatible. In the end I bought a LaCie Rikki 500GB and it worked great =) As for using it on the PC too; of course! Just don't format the entire drive as a WBFS one, partition it. Keep a FAT32 or NTFS partition for use as a standard drive on other platforms.

Check GBATEMP or other wii sites. I think you just need a new usb loader. I forget what i needed to do, but its quite easy. You may need an updated IOS but i cant remember.
