>_< - isn't this just basic physics? The material of the bullet is a lot weaker than the hardened metal frame of the sword, plus the surface area of the sword being so thin makes the pressure on the bullet a lot higher. The rounds on the pistol are probably rounded/or round/flat.

If you took a full metal jacket round with a spiked point, I think the results would be different.

Yes, yes I'm back.

It doesn't matter anyway, chances are the bullet will not hit the sword, but you. Even if you manage it, the fragments will still hit you Very Happy

There's an episode in Mythbusters where they debunk this. Not that Mythbusters is a particularly scientifically correct show but they did attempt with several swords and various kinds of bullets.

I don't think Mythbuster had access to some old Asian traditions and materials.
That katana might as well be made from unobtanium Razz

Hardly an objective test. For one, bullets are intentionally made of relatively softer metals so as to deform on impact and cause maximum damage to the target. If they were made of harder metals they would just pass through the target leaving two tiny holes which might not be enough.

Secondly, they could have repeated the test with a different type of sword and if that one had shown a different result then one could have concluded that the samurai sword is something special. The way it is, it's just some silly little film for gun nuts to go even nuttier over.

I remember seeing a similar video, only with shooting 7.62 mm machine gun rounds. and the katana broke after the 3rd hit.
