iPhone Dual-Boot Android

Quote:
Planetbeing has been working on this quietly in the background, and today he posted a new video showing that iPhone can actually dual-boot and also, that is running Android. Pre-built images and sources at http://www.mediafire.com/?xqjzn12igfn. Read the README. For generic openiboot instructions, there’s plenty now that you can search for.

It should be pretty simple to port forward to the iPhone 3G. The 3Gs will take more work. Hopefully with all this groundwork laid out, we can make Android a real alternative or supplement for iPhone users. Maybe we can finally get Flash.

If you like to help the project join the team on IRC, #iphonelinux on irc.osx86.hu

This is the best phone ever Smile

The best two OS´s in the same phone!

I want it now!

He says it´s in alpha state!

I think it´s working very good for an alpha state.

Well it's certainly promising... if they can think of a way to get Android usable with the limited buttons available, sensibly, then it may be a winner.

Yah I just managed this today, pretty cool. ;p

Took me awhile to get it running correctly, and even now, it has some odd issues and random crashes.

People are making some crazy progress with it though, I hope they can iron everything out, and they pursue, sooner rather than later, porting the entire project to the faster phones.

I wonder when will Apple start sending cease and desist letters. Once it is complete, I just can't see anyone who would want to stay with a locked down OS when they have this great thing called Android open to them... Smile

I'm definitely excited to see all the amazing places Android hopefully goes. I am dying for some new hardware myself for a better Android experience.

My only exposure right now is the original G1, and it was a fun opening for Android, but the phone is garbage. ;p

yeah, I'd love to trade in my omnia II for a HTC EVO...

no new hardware for a couple years for me though (or at least until the hardware discount > contact breaking fees)

I have Cyanogens latest running, tried apps2sd and it royally fucked my whole phone up so I had to take that out.

Not sure what swap is, and I'll have to check into overclocking!

The battery life is already pathetic though, does the overclock completely obliterate the battery life even further?

Depends, test1 (and for some test2) of 5.0.7 has a bug that is killing battery life

http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=1299&q=battery&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Priority%20Version%20Model%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars%20Modified

Overclocking depends on the phone if you have, some G1's will go up to 670 some crash etc, its finding that happy point. With mine at 614 I have not noticed a huge difference in battery life.

Instructions for test1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6352322&postcount=402

boot.img for test2 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6382405&postcount=564

(follow the instructions for test1 and flash the boot.img for what version of the rom you have, test1 or test2)

Swap can be enabled in two places (second only if you have a swap partition)

first is enabling comcache in spare parts, second is download "Swapper" from the market | settings > advanced options and enable the swap partition.

I find it faster than cyanogens 1.6 rom, and a2sd worked fine for me, but I always generally wipe when upgrading so I didnt have anything installed when enabling it.

Cool, thanks man I'll check this all out.

Apps2sd for me, it would unlink constantly, and would drop all my installed apps. Then I wouldn't be able to use market anymore, and shit would crash. I read somewhere that there are different levels of mem cards or something, different "classes" ??? I guess mine wasn't a high enough class card or something, so it was constantly detaching itself in the OS or something... sucked.

SD cards come in different classes from class 1 - class 6. Your normal cheap every day card you have is probably a class 4 or something. What the class means is the speed that data can load onto it.

Photographers need a class 6+ card generally so they can take fast photo's one after another without the worry of there being a lag of getting the picture onto the card before snapping off another. It's a huge case with video recorders.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_Class_Rating

there ya go Smile

Quote:

There are two kinds of Speed Class, "Speed Class" and "UHS Speed Class."

As a characteristic of flash memory, actual transfer speed varies. Variable speeds are difficult to reliably record streaming content such as video because it requires a constant writing speed. Speed Class and UHS Speed Class provide the constant speed necessary for video recording by designating a minimum writing performance so that minimum and constant speed is guaranteed for camcorders, video recorders and other devices with video recording capabilities under the conditional write operation specified in the specification.

Speed Class, designated as Class 2, 4, 6 and 10, is designed for normal and high speed bus interface (mode) and UHS Speed Class 1 is designed for UHS-I bus interface*. (Speed Class and the UHS Speed Class are not compatible.)
