It says, reading, then says play game but doesn't show a splash and when I launch it, it fails and says it can't read the disc. Really weird.
Gonna have to try the GLOBAL release |
you may need to try adjusting your laser on your drive. it could be wearing/wore out

No. Alone in the dark was potentially the best idea in the world, executed entirely wrong
Not doing new stuff isn't necassarily a bad thing as long as it does everything else well. IMO, this does well in all aspects (i.e. characters, story, atmosphere, sound) other than graphics which are average (and I'm fine with that).
There are plenty of other high profile games that brought nothing new to the party (e.g. Gears of War, Halo Series (with the exeption of Halo 3 Forge) and nearly every FPS game). As long as they work, and can captivate the imagination then they're doing something right.

Gears of War pushed not only graphics but small team based multiplayer.. what does Alan Wake set the benchmark for.. Luigis mansion in a fucking forest!

then again i play wii so couldn't really give a flying fuk about gfx, gfx whore should stick to pc section imo where they discuss more about how the game loox rather than plays |
+1!
Suppose these guys would have been happier with a Crysis like game, amazing graphics and shit atmosphere. Apparently that's the way to go with them; who gives a fuck about every-fucking-thing else videogames stand for, gief 1337 gfx. Oh, wait, that's not good either coz then they'll just bitch about how bad it runs.
That's why I hate most PC fanboyz, they suffer from the graphic-whore syndrome. if you get wood from gfx, then go fucking play in 3D SMAX or MAYA or what ever, gaming's clearly not for you.

yeah, it seems PC games forum users are coming here with their sand filled vaginas and ruining the console forum.

Stop trolling, dezztroy, this is the console section - you must share the same opinion as the flock, or you are a troll.
Quote: | By comparison, Alan Wake is tired and derivative. Everything about it feels dated, from the linear level design to the red-green switch nonsense to the visual stylings (surely not even J Allard has attempted the hoodie-with-jacket combo since 2005). There are plenty of fancy cut-scenes, dramatic voiceovers and cinematic camera angles, but even when Alan Wake does a good job of pretending to be a film you just feel like you're watching a really bad film. That's particularly true when it comes to the ending - without spoiling anything, let's just say you're left thinking, "You mean I kick-started all those generators for that?" |
By giving it only 7/10 in this review, Eurogamer have exposed themselves as trolls also, obviously.

Riiiight!
And about that EG review, well I reserve my right to ignore any casual gamers opinion. Yes, light headed Ellie Gibson should stick to her casual cutesy games... or the kitchen (oh, snap!).
Anyways, this is how a professional review looks like.
Quote: | Alan Wake is on the whole a propulsive, thrilling, and downright spooky action game from start to finish, quite unlike anything else on the market in visual style and storytelling format. It might take Remedy forever and a day to get from one game to the next, but Alan Wake proves once again their toil is well worth the wait. |
Also, Quick Look @ GB.

Yeah, during reading the Eurogamer review I had the feeling that the reviewer totally missed the point of the game. The game lived by its great atmosphere, story and characters. Also I really enjoyed the level design, everything felt "real". Every house and location decorated and designed with much love for detail, really enjoyed that... and usually I am the run and gun kind of player.

After finishing the game this is my impression of it. Firstly, for me graphics are fine. They do the job. Soundtrack is mostly good and at times the ambiance really fits the situation Wake finds himself in. All in all, great atmosphere for me.
The Gameplay is like other have noticed, its mostly point flashlight and shoot, maybe a flashbang now and then. But then again, Max Payne wasn't much different in that respect. Also the game is just short enough so that it doesn't quite feel like a chore in the end...again like Payne.
Now of course the story is again what drives this game, and I am a bit disappointed actually. The story is good and have lots of potential, but some things hinder it from being great.
Firstly I feel like the open world approach they intended at first would have benefited the story in some regard. Yes, usually a open world means you'll have to loosen up the story presentation, but in this game I think at least the beginning of the game would have been a lot better off if you could roam around Bright Falls taking in the sights and meet some of the citizens in it.
I kind of feel like the game rushes too quickly into the action parts. A big inspiration
is Stephen King and everyone that reads King's book knows he uses a lot of time to establish characters in the beginning before the real story starts shaping up. This is effective to make the reader actually care about his characters when something happens, because you feel you know them. I feel nothing for the characters in AW, I don't know them and the game doesn't really do anything to make me know them better. Now, I don't say the game should imitate this to the letter, but I just feel like the game would be a lot better if we actually met people and see them around town before things start going down hill and we suddenly meet them with a big ass axe in the woods one night..
Now I just feel like I meet a lot of clones I need to dispose of to progress, and i feel the story would have done good with some more fleshing out. I will try playing on nightmare to catch all the manuscript pages I couldn't get on Normal, but I doubt they alone will change my mind. As it is now though, making the game bigger to give more room for the story would have been wrong too, because then the flashlight point and shoot segments would have become longer and the two last chapters would have become boring. But if we had more/longer daytime missions where we could do other things and talk to more people and learn more about the place and story it would greatly enhance my experience of it. Maybe that's how Remedy initially wanted to make it. Open World/exploring in daytime, Missions and Game progressing at night? That way people that wanted more story could do that, and those who just want to progress can go to next mission start point.
Game is still a buy though, and a 8/10 from me. Could and should have been more though, it's one of those games where I feel it is somehow incomplete, yet has a really nice wrapping.

I dunno what that is but I just compared it to what I see on my hdtv and its nothing like it.
Anyway, sorry to have brought up graphics again, hopefully that's the end of it.

Is there any exploration at all, or is it more like Gears, on-rail from start to finish? Can you jump?
Never really liked Remedy's games, they take themselves too seriously, in a over-the-top redicoulous way that usually doesnt work for me.

^^ yes you can jump... and there is minimal exploration but I wouldn't exactly call it "on rails"

Do the coffee bottles you can collect have any further sense? Do they unlock something?

I only saw the ending when completing it on normal difficulty. Remedy like to hide the real ending for players who complete their games at the highest difficulty setting and the fact that some manuscript pages are only available on nightmare is a solid indicator.
Spoiler: | And that ending didn't seem very open to me. Alan says that sacrifices must be made at the end to make the story believable. He can't save Alice, defeat the dark presence and live happily ever after. | Now I'm wondering how they alter it on the harder setting.

Spoiler: | well i read that remedy is using a "cliff hanger" end - so they can continue the series. They are not yet sure about the final end of alan wake... so it DOES continue. I think he is still writing the story at the bottom of the lake - Im sure he will continue his adventures soon! |
