I've never heard of Feminism being a mandatory class...hell, I didn't even know there was an actual class to it.
What's involved in the class? Studying woman's right and shit like that?
I can see how that would be applicable say 40 years ago...but nowadays. A woman can do whatever she wants.
Yes there is still discrimination, but nowadays, everyone has to deal with discrimination on some level....whether your white, black, foreign, male, female etc
I dunno, I think its fucking pointless...especially for Computer Science. I mean, how can you incorporate feminist ideals in computer software...? I guess you can't name a piece of code Lucy or Stacy or refer to a program you wrote as 'she'
Ridiculous.
And I mentioned Berkly because it just seems fitting given its history. |

Computer science at UC Irvine here 
The women's studies class isn't necessarily mandatory, but we have a full lecture because it is the only class that fulfills 2 GE categories. This means that if you take this class and pass, you can skip another class, which is awesome. Aside from that, we (meaning most students in the class) have absolutely no interest in the class.
The class itself covers a variety of Marxist (read: hardcore commie shit) topics. Commodity racism, class/consumer differences, the corruption of the market economy due the demands of its political economy, women & race & gays & civil rights in the military (which is the only topic where I agree with the prof), analysis of how pop media (Sex and the City, The L Word) influence our perception of women and sexuality in our society, how advertisements demean women and again lead to racism... and all that bullshit.
INCOHERENT RANT, DON'T READ UNLESS YOU'RE REALLY FUCKING BORED
Honestly, it really bothers me how much the woman reads into advertisements and pretty much demonizes the advertising industry. I'll admit we (I run in internet marketting circles a lot so this really hits home) aren't exactly angels, and the ad industry has done its fair amount of shit. Ok. However, if the new Nike commercial:
shows a black woman with a big butt, that isn't demonizing the woman and deliberately perpetuating the stereotype that black women have fine asses, as my prof would have me believe. It's simply exploiting the stereotype that black women have big asses to garner attention for the advertisement. Honestly, advertisers don't give a flying fuck about the social implications of their ads. They just use popular stereotypes and pop culture and abide by them. Advertisers are not evil corporations bent upon mind controlling the general public into a society of sexism, racism, hedonism, and god knows what. Society was already like that BEFORE the advertisers; the advertisers are merely influenced by society, and not the other way around.
Other stupid shit about the class that bothers me is the constant implication that a market economy doesn't work, and that the world is heading towards a complete collapse of our society by 2070 (she actually showed us a video where the author said, our capitalist system is WRONG and will completely collapse in 70 years). Look, I'm not going to argue that capitalism is perfect, or try to defend the obvious shit that happens in a capitalist economy where corporations are more concerned about the bottom line than doing the right thing. However, I am tired of this "eventual collapse of the evil capitalist system" that the Marxists keep harping on every couple of decades. Remember the Great Depression of the 1930s? Where the Soviet Union was ascending while the US and all other market economies were stagnant? Guess what all the commies were saying then? Same shit they're saying now: Capitalism is inherently flawed, it has collapsed, communism is the future. Fast forward 60 years to 1990, and tell me what happened? The Soviets suffered a catastrophic collapse while the US speeds on full sail ahead. And yet, as soon as a recession hits, I get all these commmies emerging from the woodworks with their stupid fucking doomsday prophecies. Jesus, grow up people. If you like a command economy and a centralized society so much move to fucking China, and see how great of a time you will have there.
I'm not arguing that the American capitalist system is perfect. I'm just tired of all the neo-Communists on my campus advocating radical change such as the rejection of all consumer goods and moving towards a hegemonic homogenous society. They argue that consumption and consumer goods are leading our society to self-destruction, so we should just reject is all outright. Listen, I'll agree that there is a lot of bullshit out there that people will overspend on and that has absolutely no purpose. And yet, at the same time, all that bullshit is fueling an economy that drives down the prices of consumer goods that allows me, the consumer, to buy whatever the fuck I want because everything is affordable. If you reject that and move towards some fucked up control economy I won't have the freedom to consume what I want, AND I DON'T WANT THAT. I like my consumer goods just the way they are, thank you very fucking much. I don't want to live like a Chinese peasant for the rest of my life just because some commies think that the ads on my shoe commercials perpetuate racial rifts in society. Fuck you, my society is not perfect, but please realize how much better it is then the feudalist/stalinist whatever the fuck will emerge from the bullshit you are advocating.

I remember back in 2005 when I was an anti-marxist (government brainwashing boo) our psychology prof. forced us (rather recommended but told us he would ask in exam) to read Das Kapital and I refused, and failed that class : ) Ahaha
So my suggestion is reading is good mate, try to take all the possible knowledge you'll ever need or won't, try to become a polymath. Trust me, you'll benefit.

Oh I read it all. I'll read anything you put in front of me. The thing is, I vehemently disagree with the readings and feel that the authors' view of the world is fundamentally flawed, and that my teacher is just spewing Marxist propaganda by forcing us to read said readings. Furthermore, she has the duty as an educator to give us all points of view on a problem. But she doesn't. She just gives her favorite (radical Marxist-feminist) point of view, and ignores anyone who suggests other points of view. It's not education, it's brainwashing, and I resent it.
