I dunno, i see the graphical issues people are complaining about but so far they don't bother me much, and some parts of the game are still stunning. I only logged an hour or so last night, liked it so far. Happy it came out for the xbox, I haven't gotten into this series much and really doubt i would have tried it otherwise.

Thats just it, it doesnt have that feel of a FF game for me. I think the boat sailed tbh, cos I hated FF12 aswel. FFX was the last true FF game for me. |
hahaha I feel EXACTLY the same way.
FF-X was the last good FF game.

Agreed, I enjoyed FF-X alot, that I played through it two times. That was the last time I really enjoyed a Final fantasy game, I played a bit of Final Fantasy XII but never got to finishing it, in fact I stopped at around 25% of the game. It did have amazing voice work though. But it just could not hold my interest.
I am 4 hours into XIII and can say so far this is the worst FF game I ever played as far as gameplay and exploring is concerned. Plus some of the characters are fucking annoying as fuck. Especially that orange hair girl, and the young kid. So fucking annoying those characters and their voices to. WTF happened to Square? They need to go back to the roots of what Final Fantasy used to be. Exploring, villages, gameplay, mini games, better music, non-annoying characters with stupid voices, no cheesy dialogue.
Honestly if this is the path square is going with future FF games, then XIII is probably the last I will ever play. Unless they remake FF VII of course.

Squaresoft = FFX
Square-Enix = Everything after FFX
See what happened there ?
Both great companys in there own right, it should have been the RPG gamers dream team, but its ended up fucking up one of the games that I would always buy.
I paid full price for all of them until this one.
I just couldnt plkay FFXII, X-2 was shite, I dont do online games so XI was out, FFVII psp (whatever it was subtitled) was shite and all the other spin off ones have been naff.
this is the first one I have not bought at launch, and the more I read the happier I am for not buying it.
I will grap it and play it at some point because I will need to see it for myself but I am not bothered if that is in a month of a year.
Besides that I just bought FFVIII on PSN and my wife is playing FFX, so all is not lost I will live in the past happily and then western game reviewers (and some gamers) can continue to moan about jRPG's and turn based battles and long winded storys until FFIV when square will make a 4 hour long epic that only requires you to press "Yes" to save, it will do all leveling up and what not for you, because thats what the west has demanded!

17 hours in and I really like it. sure, it's as linear as it gets, but I don't care about that. Final Fantasy games were always linear anyway. Earlier games might have had the illusion of freedom but that really only led to you not knowing where to go next to progress the story. I don't exactly miss that.
What I care about is the combat, which is awesome, and the story, which is getting more intriguing all the time.
If I want freedom and choices I'll go play dragon age or something. This is clearly final fantasy to me and pretty much what I expected.
I don't mind the capped crystarium either because the fights are obviously designed with that in mind. You don't have to grind, you just need to figure out the right strategy, so why are people annoyed that they can't grind and subsequently steamroll a boss? They should just try thinking a little instead.
The 2 kids that were pretty annoying in the beginning are also not so bad anymore now.
The only real problem I see here is with the combat limitations that they remove way too slowly, forcing you to fight as characters and classes you might not enjoy. Other than that, it's great.

I have some serious trouble killing some of the enemies in Chapter 4
Spoiler: | in the pulse-scrapyard those mechanical pulse soldiers. I take forever to kill them O.o |

lol wow you're right, I didn't think of that. I kinda liked that system too :-)
about those enemies...I'm not exactly sure I'm thinking of the right ones, but if I am,
Spoiler: | the key is to stagger them, as with so many enemies. As long as they're not staggered you can barely damage them. What I suggest is attacking them for a few rounds as commando + ravager until the chain bar has filled up a bit, then quickly switch to ravager + ravager and use the slowed chain reduction that you got from using the commando before to easily fill up the bar and stagger them. Once they're staggered they should take a lot more damage. stay with 2x ravager while they're staggered too to increase the chain bonus even more and deal increased damage. you might have to do this twice, I don't remember. They're pretty tough enemies for sure so maybe you already did all this and it simply won't go any faster :P |

I'm going to try and summarize my thoughts after 7 hours of play, in two ways.. I tried to be as fair as I possibly could and If it helps, I loved FF7 and FF9 the most. So if thats you Id hazard a guess that youl feel the same about FF13. There does seem to be a few people undecided on getting it so hopefully this will help you guys decide.
Why this doesnt feel like an FF Game and why I DONT like it:
- Character progression is linear
- Game is like a corridor of move forward and press X to not die
- Characters are gimmicky, childish and un-interesting unless your an angsty teenage faggot like "Hope"
- Anille is a complete cunt. I just want to punch the person who did character design
- terrible voice acting overall.. whats with all the sex noises and "uh, ah, eh, huh, mmmm" noises they all make constantly? its like a deliberate attempt at making teenagers horny from watching a spunky ginger cunt bitch make sex noises on a game.
- fighting system is too locked and linear.. you cant switch players and must always just mash X to win most fights, occasional un-challenging paradigm shifts required..
- overall fighting was better in FFx and before. I loved the system, why change it to this dumbed down shit?
Things I do like, yes there are some..
- Graphics and art direction are stunning. If the world wasnt so damn nice to look at I think I woulda quit the game now..
- Story and awe around pulse and its mystery is somewhat interesting but I get the feeling it will have a crap ending, this kind of game usually does.
- Sound! amazing.. the music is great and very atmospheric..
overall for me..
Feels like a dumbed, watered down FF aimed at a much younger audience with these cheesy characters and simpler fighting system. Graphics and atmosphere are the only thing keeping me playing.

I finally played the 360 and ps3 versions yesterday...and seriously other than a slightly noticeable hi-resolution in the fmvs on the ps3, there is abso-f___ing-lutely no difference between the 2 versions. All those screenshots and videos were FUD, created by fanboys and the idiot media...and the folks that actually believed it to be true without checking it, I just feel sorry...lol

After reading this thread I've decided that I won't even bother to burn this game after all. It sounds like it would bore me to tears for the first few hours at least and I just don't think that I could get through that.

Mate, give it a try. It's a single dual layer and if you aren't enjoying it after that? Then you've lost nothing but a couple hours and a 50p blank DVD =)

I'd sure as hell like to know where you people are finding all your shrouds (smokes) though. By the sounds of it, you've all got a ludicrous supply. You know how many I've found in the game so far? Six. TOTAL. 25hrs, not missed a single chest and only ran from ONE fight, and I've found SIX shrouds (not including Etherol).
So yeah, it's all well and good saying "use shrouds against the boss" when you apparently have 99 in stock, it's a LITTLE more difficult to pull off when you have zero.

I only used the shrouds vs the (later) bosses so yeah I had like 6-8 . There is also an item which increases shroud drop rate. You can get it as a mission reward.
And when you beat the game you can buy them all (except the avoid shroud).

You don't really need them it just makes things quicker and a bit easier. And it also helps to get 5* rating since you save time not buffing.

only time I came close to dying was early on fighting the Shiva sisters. It took me a few to realize what to do.
