I dont have the 5870 anymore but vaguely remember the GPUZ tabs, which part did you want to check ? It all seemed ok tho, the clocks, PCIE at 16x etc. Was an ASUS card.

No point.
Really, if you're gaming at 1680x1050 then that's why the 5870 didn't do more. It's completely CPU limited at that resolution. Upgrading to an i7 won't do much either, although at that resolution it'll have more impact than upgrading your GPU.
A C2D is still fine, especially since you've got it running at 3.7 - to see any real benefit from either a CPU or GPU upgrade, you need to start playing at 1920x1080 at the very least whilst turning up every bit of detail
