Watched it in 3D too. I don't think that the story was "meh", it was good actually but I've already seen it dozens of times. James Cameron did Terminator and Aliens so you can say that he already did enough breakthroughs in movie history and has the right to relax and make remakes but on the other hand I expected more from him.
As far as the effects go, I don't like CGI driven movies. Avatar has lots of shots that serve only to showcase the awesome animations which will look laughable in ten years time. CGI should be used as an extension to real shots, not as a replacement because they don't age well. Therefore I don't agree with people who give it high ratings because of it's excessive use of CGI.
I find it difficult to rate it. It feels like a flawlessly executed remake of a good movie that didn't need a remake in the first place, so it tries to justify its existence by being the most expensive movie ever.
I understand why some people give it 10/10 and others only 4/10, I can't disagree with either side. I felt entertained throughout the movie but I don't feel the urge to watch it again.

I seriously doubt it will be "laughable" - it might not keep up with the standards in 10 years, but definitly not laughable.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Yes, "laughable" might be too hard. Still they won't age well and people will only consider them as a reference how far CGI has progressed since 2009. The "wow" effect will pass and people will only talk about how good it's directed and how worn out the story is.

Anthirs wrote: | Maybe - but its still a good movie imo. Nothing groundbreaking with the acting or story - but still a good movie. You don't need an exceptional story or original one to make a movie good imo..sometimes its enough if the whole thing is well done (not talking about the cgi now)
Cos lets face it - even the most original story has things in it that you can find in other ones too
Edit: Using a winning concept rather than trying something completely new is sometimes better. |
thats exactly what i said. a good story well told is far far better than an ambitious cluttered story EVERY time. avatar mightnt be a groundbreaking story, but what it is, is a very polished one.

lol honestly the CGI was so good I got lost in the movie and didn't even for a second think it wasn't. Yeah in some places you can see texture flaws and shit, but like :O CGI in this movie was mind blowing. It'll last more than 10 years. At least i hope so.

The visuals were the best I've ever seen and the 3d was mindboggling. Creating depth of field like that was completely masterful.
James Cameron is the reason for the visuals in modern movies and he will now be the reason for 3d movies the way they will be in 5-10 years.
Story was masterfully told. As people have said, telling a simple story well will always connect you better to the audience than telling a convoluted one at all. The movie had simple, distinct messages, and didn't stray from the sort of typical hollywood story.
Bravo James. You've done it again.

It's not like Cameron forced the dude to go watch his movie, he seems to believe that he's entitled to be respected by Cameron just because he watched the movie, fucking bullshit. And then he just keeps on mouthing off to him over and over again. Fucking dipshit. |
Ive seen Gene Simmons do the same thing. he has been in the BIZ long enough that he can spot true fans and people that are just out to make a buck off of signatures. I bet this was one of those same situations. I remember Simmons even had a guy that also had someone witha camera and he said, "now your going to post that video on the internet in attempt to make me look like the A-hole but your still not getting the signature." he didn't lose his cool though.

Cinema was sold out but we got there early enough to be at the front of the line and have good seats.
It had some cool elements to it story wise, it just didn't do anything that blew me away. It was a good story, it just wasn't anything really standout special to me.
Acting was really good. CGI was the best I have ever seen. 3d effect was really great.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did everyone that was with me.

good to see its doing some damn nice box office business.. over 600m worldwide so far, which is great news... means there will likely be more avatar films (and of this calibre too) with cameron directing, but more importantly, it means he can continue doing his films the way he wants... which fucking rocks
havent gotten around to seeing the movie again yet, but still definately want too.

I wonder what will he put in the sequels? This time people will come and bomb them from the orbit? Although I would want to know what happens next in their world, I don't think that the sequel will be that good..

all ill say is that i think as a director/filmmaker, he has a hell of a lot more integrity than most in the industry, and he wont make another film unless it makes sense for him to do so... i think terminator proved that... they squeezed another 2 sequels out of the franchise with at least another 1 more on the way, but cameron said nah thats all the story i want to tell after the second one... i think the second avatar film will have a great/interesting concept that will advance the story of pandora, otherwise he wouldnt be doing it... i cant fucking wait to see what he comes up with.
and if hes truely said he has a trilogy story 'arc' planned, then that means the first story was made with more in mind, making it a small part of a greater story, as opposed to the usual 'lets just keep tacking more arbitrary shit on' method by which most sequels are made, and THAT is great news. remember, just because you cant come up with an exciting idea for the next story, doesnt mean he cant...
Spoiler: |
if i had to guess though, id say the third film would feature the big earth vs pandora smackdown, not the second... perhaps the second will be more about finding a new home, and/or further uniting the clans... i seriously doubt he united every clan on the planet within a day or two. |

Yup. Second one will be about humans coming back to kick ass and there will be moar effects and moar explosions and it will end on a cliff-hanger with things looking very grim for the smurfs. And in the third one Jake will go all Neo on their ass with probably some help from that eva god.

another thing... if this is going to be a trilogy/franchise... wont the title become totally redundant seeing as there are no avatars left? i mean if the next film isnt about avatars, nor would it feature any of them... at least i cant imagine the film would feature them, unless they did something really convoluted and silly with the plot..
can anyone else think of a franchise where the title no longer matter or was relevant after the first film?
