|
 |
So I was given a laptop that "would power off randomly." So I did a little work on it (removed a large amount of dog hair/dust) and now it works just fine.
The only problem is that it's kinda old...
WinXP
1.7GHz Centrino Mobile
512Mb Ram
On Board Graphics
120 GB HDD
I really don't need this thing but after cleaning it up and putting a fresh install of XP on it, it's running nice and I would hate to just put it in the closet and never use it.
Any suggestions for what I should do with this thing?

I'm assuming the battery is shot so it's mobility is all but gone, which is its only redeeming feature. I'd just sell it, you can probably get a few bucks on craigslist.

Battery is definitely shot. Maybe a good 5 minutes unplugged.
I had a few 720p BR rips running decently on there but its still no HTPC.
I can only imagine i'd get no more than $100 for it on craigslist.
I'm liking the emulators idea... I like those old school pac man machines where the game is built into a table... I wonder if there is something like that I could accomplish with this thing... shouldnt take too much work. A little carpentry to modify a table and getting some controllers attached.
bounce some more ideas off me. I'm going to look into this table thing and see what I'm getting into.

I believe that machine will have no problems playing most MAME roms (perhaps except those that use CPS3), but still, that's a huge variety of games. I suggest checking the Metal Slug series.
You can use this site for ROMS: http://romkeeper.com/
But only if you own them.

Also, it should handle most other emulators pretty much flawlessly. Anything up to and including the PS1 (N64 would be doubtful, but you could always give it a shot)

That Rom Keeper site seems to be down Leo. Luckily I have a bunch of roms from elsewhere.
I'm thinking I only really want classic stuff like NES, SNES, Genesis, and Arcade.
I really like those Joysticks Spykez. I might pick up a couple after I get this thing going.
Thanks everyone.
