Blairwitch Project.... I watch movies all day and i love horror movies.... but there are not many really frightening me... al the gore stuff doesn´t scare me , watched first snuff stuff at age of 12^^ and all these splatter movies like guinea pig, men behind sun,nekromantik, sado stoss das tor zur hölle auf, braindead..... inot really scary. i think i saw nearly everything of the gore stuff... but Blairwitch Projekt really got me^^ i watch horror movies only alone and when i had no people all day it´s 1 point plus too... this "alone" feeling really helps to become scared a bit better on my opinion...
I really enjoy fear sometimes

Do you guys really think the evil dead flicks are scary at all though? Don't get me wrong.. I love them.. but they're not very scary. Same with the Thing. Great movie, but not really scary. Creepy maybe.. intense.. but not really that scary.

I am not stoned when watching movies usually, and still, I honestly can't say when was the last time, if ever, I got scared. Probably, on large part, due to having no belief in the supernatural. Come to think about it, actually feeling scared usually happens when I am so evolved in the story, that I actually care about the character and what is happening to it (e.g. a sudden and unexpected car crash, etc). In fact, most "horror" movies bore me to death because aside from trying to be "horrific", they are for the most part horrid in the story and often in the acting. Usually, the horror movies I enjoy, like Alien, 28 Days Later, etc, offer a lot more in form of excellent art style, good story telling, good acting, etc, so it becomes about good movie versus bad movie in general, with the horror genre slapped to it playing no role at all for me.

I'll freely admit to sometimes feeling a slight rush of adrenalin when a nicely developed "beeeeeehind ya!"-scene is well executed. You know something is going to jump out and scare you any second, and yet you can't stop it from scaring you. It's not like I flinch or show any outward signs of being scared.. but still it feels good. A little rush. That's the only reason to watch a scary movie in the first place. When I'm stoned, and subsequently don't get that rush, it's all pretty meaningless.

Uh, reminds me of the oh so used cliche:
A character walking into a scene (usually very poorly lit with flickering lights) expecting something bad to happen;
"Tension" grows;
A moment of comic relief ensues;
Character loses its guard;
Worse than originally expected happens.
>_<

hard for me to say which is the best horror movie... different movies excel for different reasons.. alien is a fine choice as was mentioned, because it was simply an amazing movie that was done so well... but i also saw someone suggest the descent which i think is another excellent choice, because of the setting... claustrophobic caves.. it was genuinely uncomfortable, unsettling and scary at points, due to the overbearing isolated feeling of the setting and situation.
and then theres films like rec, which had a genuinely terrifying final 15 or so minutes, which was scarier than the entirety of many 'horror' movies.

Going to give a bit of love to the slasher horrors.
First out is Halloween: genre defining classic and probably still the best made slasher around. The score in this is absolutely immense and for me is up there with the best movie soundtracks of all time.
Moving on, we travel back in time a few years to 1974 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Really, this isn't just the all out gore fest the title might have you believe, instead it's incredibly dark and just all round twisted. The scene when the family is having dinner freaks me right out.
Jumping forward in time, and landing in 1996 and Scream. Yes, really. Scream is a masterpiece by one of the best horror directors of all time. It brought back what seemed to have been a dead genre, and did it with incredible finesse and a terrific cast. Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Neve Campbell and of course the lovely Rose McGowan are all too good to be acting in a genre that is associated with poor acting.

Scream 1, 2 & 3, (see them as the true slasher spoof not like that crap Scary Movie)
[rec] - One of the greatest feat in zombie horror and definitely blew Romeros Diary of The Dead out of water.
The Descent as the op pointed out, definitely has a good buildup and a satisfying pay off (if you watch the original cut that is) I can also recommende his Dog Soldiers and to some degree Doomsday.

Not exactly, it's dedication from Craven about the slasher films he, Carpenter and Cunningham did in the 70s and 80s, the film has constant references to Cravens own films aswell to the slasher genre in general.
