see them for what they are: random and stupid. Dont make the mistake to give them "meaning" by overestimating their significance.

The human brain is wired to perceive the world in terms of usability / manipulation. When you see stuff, you instantly recognize how you can manipulate it and make it do things.

This may lead to the following thought for a woman holding her newborn baby: "i could throw my baby out of that window"

While this may sound silly, it it something that randomly happens, e.g. people having strangely fucked up thoughts depending on the environmental cues. Most people will just shrug it off as stupid thoughts. But some people are deeply shocked because of the inherent meaning. Like in the example above the woman with child. She could be shocked so much about such a thought that it will make her lose trust in herself as a mother. Or question her love for her child.

Giving these random thoughts meaning and recognizing them as more than just random idiocy garbled up by a brain on standby is the root of the problem with such random thoughts - and may in some cases lead to compulsive thoughts / disorders.

So just learn to recognize them as stupid and get on with your life. Nothing to see here, just random thoughts Very Happy

Professional tip: if all else fails to get weird thoughts out of your head, start calculating stuff (adding numbers, substracting, and similar) and make yourself something to eat and drink. If that doesnt help, see a shrink Wink

Great post! I sometimes have stupid thoughts too and wondered where they come from. The tip with the calculations is great, I'll try that the next time!

People make things complicated and invent all different excuses to excuse a behaviour they're 100% in control of. "I can't help it" is complete BS.

No matter what anyone says, YOU choose your thoughts. You can either accept that, and take responsibility for them, and if you don't like them; think differently.

People are creatures of habit, and to change habits we have to make conscious decisions. Some people think there's some kind of magic force that makes them think or act in a way, but we are responsible for it all. It's just convenient to try and live under the illusion that's there some mystical mumbo-jumbo putting thoughts in our heads.

You can change it if you want to, or remain as you are if it's more comfortable. But don't go around and play dumb. Cause the situation you're in, you put yourself in. It's convenient for ya to eg. feel sorry for yourself and pretend there are circumstances out of your control. It's convenient because you feel you can just think that it isn't up to you to decide while it always is.

And not making a decision is making one. So if you have certain thoughts, it's because you chose to think them. Probably for a reason. A desire. A wish. Or whatever. The question is if you're going to live with it, confront it, act on it, or just realize that all social conventions go out the window sometimes - and we have sides of our personality that aren't politically correct. Whatever they may be.

Yeah, like Lutzifer said, it's probably a OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. For some people it can be a nightmare if you can't keep it under control. It's not necessary to have compulsions just intrusive thoughts. OCD is very often a part of depression. You just have to ignore these thoughts and they will go away. Yeah, it's hard. Exclamation

1. No thought is ours. All thought comes from outside. It is another matter that we cling to those thoughts or ideas and end up wasting our life in pursuing them.

2. 99% of our thinking is repeated. Very rarely we think some thing new.

3. Thinking can't be stopped. But Meditation is one way to go beyond thinking state.

4. Our thoughts are fed on our energy and that drain us. Less one thinks more peaceful, calm and more energy one has.

How to Witness thoughts

1. Witnessing Thoughts means we don't need to identify with any thoughts. By Identification I mean, when ever any thought comes - Don't involve yourself with it. Don't condemn it, Don't Judge it. Don't Analyze it and Don't give your analysis on it. Just let them come and Go.

2. Let the thoughts come. If you just let them come then you will see they will leave on their own. Your attitude should be like that of a person who is standing on a traffic signal and seeing a vehicle coming and going. But if that person tries to stop any vehicle then accident can happen. Similarly if we try to stop thinking or we get involve with any thought, then we have gone offtrack. Just Stay Aloof from the thoughts. These thoughts and ideas are not yours.

3. It's easier to witness/see the thoughts which are Good. But when ever any negative or moralistic thought comes we suddenly becomes involve "how can such a thought come to me". It's OK. Stay Calm, relaxation is very important in Meditation. Learn the art to stay relax in day to day living.

4. Don't Choose Thoughts or Divide them. e.g. This is a Good thought and that is Bad thought. Understand that All are thoughts and they have come on their own and they will leave on their own. Your involvement with the thoughts are not required and not essential.

5. If you identify with a thought and you realize it then Immediately starts witnessing them again. Don't repent or blame yourself. Blaming needs your involvement via another thought process.

6. Be Regular in your practice. It may sound like a Buddhist teachings. But more one watches the Thoughts, better he becomes in the art of Witnessing. Osho has said "To become more aware, One has to become more Aware". Awareness leads to Awareness. So be sincere and practice it when ever you have time.

7. If you stop interfering or involving with a particular type of thought then slowly it will stop coming to you.

Well lets say if besthijacker or anyone else for that matter would be able to choose his thoughts then they wouldnt have anything to complain about, right?
one can imagine himself feeding the poor one day and killing some fucker the next. Just because he had two completely different and opposing thoughts doesnt make him neither a good person nor a murderer.
Thoughts have nothing to do with who one person really is; You can choose upon witch one to focus and you can certainly choose your actions (events->thoughts->?reactions? NO) Everyone taught that from Buddha to Jesus to Osho. You dont agree, fine.. but calling it rubish ...

They can. Yes. Not everyone choose to do it is all.

This is not an argument against being able to control your thoughts.

Quote:

Thoughts have everything to do with who you are. It's just that not everyone chooses to control themselves and their thoughts. All of us have instincts due to our reptilian brains and instinctively think about things. But it's all a part of who we are, we choose to. It's just not always politically correct to think "I want to cut this fuckhead into bits", so some of us think because we think this way "We're bad". We aren't, society (and it's norms) just teaches that some thoughts are bad, and some aren't.

Personally I have nothing against thinking "I want to fuck that guy up", because I do think that a lot. I know I could avoid thinking that way, because I have control of myself and my actions, as do you. Some of us choose to think that thoughts are magically appearing out of nowhere because it's too difficult for some people to deal with "OMG WHAT AM I THINKING, I MUST BE CRAZY". They don't want to believe they are capable of choosing such thoughts because they go in such stark contrast to what is the norm. And go figure dude. It's easier to project it on other stuff (such as mental instability).

And I don't give a shit what Buddha, Jesus or Osho taught. No one but you yourself is in control. If you want to believe someone else is in control then fine. There's billions of douschebags who project their inabilities for self-control on God's, politicians, officers or "A VOICE IN MY HEAD TOLD ME TO CUT BILLY INTO TWO".

To paraphraze George Carlin: "Why do these voices in our heads not tell people to go to Wendy's and take a dump in the salad bar?" - probably because a lot of people want to be destructive, choose to be, and then blame "voices in their head". Because it's so much easier than to take responsibility for them.
