The latter rose from the former, although the two are now so estranged that to reunite them would be an act of savage madness. Imagine a gaggle of modern hack-n-slash roleplayers who had somehow never been exposed to the original Tolkien mythos, and then imagine taking those players and trying to introduce them to Tolkien via a D&D campaign. Just started reading, it's pretty good even tho I've never played P&P D&D.

Oh LOL this is great, thx for the link, gonna enjoy that Me I played P&P AD&D, MERP and also Vampire. I guess lotsa people think of that as something very nerdish but hey I had lots of fun and we had lots of beer too while playing. It is a very social activity but unfortunately it doesn't attract a lot of females. Btw P&P RP started 17 years ago for me and stopped about 7 years ago, groups disband and sooner or later you lose contact with certain acquaintances and friends Formerly known as iconized

"I hate this campaign" was prolly the most used phrase in the whole DMofR comic series, even the DM chimed in on that. Still I loved it, had a lot of things in it that I could recognize although the players were a bit too negative. Then again it was a comic made by a DM. Formerly known as iconized
