I would chose the solution that would cause me the least amount of worrisomeness in the long run.

Does the job offer any benefits like paid vacations or health care? You could do the job for a couple of years, earn some good money and gain some contacts to take back to the freelance world.

If you're happy with your current financial status, stick with it. There's also the fact that we're in a crisis at the moment, so you'll probably sell yourself cheap. If you don't have any kids, just lay back and enjoy life. You can always look for a fulltime job later if it becomes absolutely necessary.

to be honest, i thought the try it option was the best suggestion so far. i dunno what ur doing at the moment, but if whatever self employed work you do is something you can just pick up and start again relatively easily, then id just say take the job and see how it goes. if ur totally fucking miserable, then chuck it and go back to what ur doing now.

86k a year? jesus f christ, that's astronomical in the shithole I live in.
Though, if I were you, and I'm a damn lazy bastard, I'd stick to your current freelance job. The pay is fine, you enjoy it and you have more than enough of free time. Yeah, extra cash is never a bad thing, but money isn't everything.

I would take the opportunity. What do you have to lose, you can always quit if you don't like it and want your 30 hours a week back. You may really enjoy it, and it may be a great experience.
And there is something to be said about stability in a job and finances. Not saying you don't already have this. But you could bank some cash for a rainy day.

Thank god some people here have sense and have advised you to try the job and see if you like it.
You said yourself you're torn, so what's the problem with just giving it a month trial.

shouldn't you go to the interview first?
shouldn't a position like this be competitive? as in they interview a few people before deciding?

Dude you are saying you earn quite a lot when you earn what? 40k a year.
It is a lot when you are 12 or 15. But face it, it is barely more, if it is more, than the starting wage for an engineer or some other degree job.
Of course you should take your 86k job. you have a secured job, probably (finally) a decent pension plan, health insurance, and the full range of benefits you dont have when doing your lazy ass job.
btw a 86k job is not a job they will give to a random dude immediately. You will not have to sign the minute you enter the bureau, do you have time to consider and negotiate.
btw whats the situation for the moment? and why the hell will you be absent 5 months? Will they lock you inside a bunker? Even when you have a 60h workweek (which is quite improbable), you have pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeenty of spare time.

40K is definitely a good wage, I earn 34k a year (admittedly I do fuck all for this) and this is easily enough to live off. Not only does this allow me to support all my living costs, but I can also afford to hire space in a private lab for the pursuit of personal projects.
Money has never been a big motivator for me, and if anything I'm averse to materialism. So I'm totally comfortable with this financially, and while it has been enabling in certain ways I feel little need to pursue a greater salary. I have other priorities of much greater importance to me, and if my 'job' was any more demanding it would interfere with that.

What is life about?
It's about having the deepest, richest experience possible! Are you going to achieve that by working a well paid job? Most definitely NOT. If you're not deeply, deeply satisfied with your life. THEN MAKE CHANGES.
You always mention how well you earn but feel empty and not fullfilled at all.
Give up your attachments to the superficial bullshit that's been fed down your throat.
You seem to have enough time on your hands and still make a living.
Start TRAVELING. I feel that I have an obligation to see the world. The more of the world I can see, the more alive and integrated I become.
There is nothing stopping you!
