Hi,

So I have just bought a second Wii. This one isn't chipped and isn't on FW 4.2 (i think it's on 4.0 or something).

Anyway, what is the deal with softmodding this? Do I need to buy anything specific, or can I just softmod it using the memorycard exploit thing?

Has anyone got a link to a begininners guide to soft modding it?

Once softmodded, will it play games just by inserting the copied disk into DVD drive, or will I have to load all burnt games via something like NeoGamma?

should be possible by loading the elf from the sd card menu

guide:
http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/16970-new-3-1-4-1-softmod-any-wii.html

you will of course still need to use a backup loader, except if you install cioscorp. this will enable you to start discs right from the disc channel, but the danger of a brick is quite high due to the amount of system files modified.

ah ok, and can I install backup loader to the Wii's HDD? or will I always need to keep a sd card in the Wii?

you basically have 2 options:
a) load the backup loader through the HBC - sd card needed
b) install it (if possible) as a .wad - there you have your "new" disc channel! Very Happy
(btw, neogamma r8b7 wad is included with the files posted in the thread i've mentioned above so you don't have to search for it)

Any ideas? They play fine from the USB hdd / mem stick..!

what media are you using? the only good ones i've come across so far are verbatim and sony dvd-r

but yeah, just stay with usb. as long as it works flawlessly, it's the better solution in the long run anyway.

well they are woolworths dvds, and tesco dvds. cheap, but they all work flawlessly on my old ass wii. This one is under a year old, so i can only assume the newer drives are more fussy.

Another question:

can you make wads to autolaunch neogamma games from USB from the wii dashboard?

Aka, it makes it loadable from the Wii dashboard? Without having to load neogamma etc?

Horrordee, how have you got on?

Just bought a Wii yesterday so will be looking to do this as soon as I get an SD Card.

As someone who's previously chipped the original Xbox (soldering included) and flashed my 360 and PSP I have to admit the Wii is new territory.

I've had a quick glance at the guide, it seems simple enough. Was it? Anything you'd recommend / advise?

i don't know about horrordee but i would recommend reading that guide 3 or 4 times through. if you're like me it's easier to follow directions if you know WHY you're doing something than it is to just do it without knowing.

i did mine last night and i had 2 different problems that aren't mentioned in the guide. after installing ios36, then downgrading to 15 and upgrading back to 36 (wtf, why? why why why!!!) my homebrew channel was upside down. i had to do a little reading and found 3 different fixes but the one i used that worked for me was just re-installing the homebrew channel. i had a little trouble getting the updated firmware installed (step 4, because the guide needs to be a little more direct) which i did fix but i think it caused my next problem which was installing priiloader. it gave me an error on install but after rebooting, it was installed BUT i couldn't go back to the system menu (with the wii channels and dinky music, etc). tried uninstall priiloader and it said it couldn't restore the systemmenu. i guess it was gone or deleted or something.

i had to do a little reading and found a systemmenu wad to use to reinstall mine and then installed the wad's mentioned at the end of it and then it was time for bed. so as far as i can tell i'm done but now i have to figure out if my wii will read dvdr's or if i'll have to use the usb option. overall it wasn't really difficult at all but it would've just made more sense to me if i knew what an IOS was and why i had to install one, downgrade to an older one and then go back to the newer one. but that's just me. come to think of it maybe i should hit up the wiki so i can know for the future.

oh yea, one last thing - i can't get my nand to back up because using the power, reset and eject buttons to move doesn't work and i dont have a gamecube controller so if you want to back up your nand and can get your hands on one beforehand i would recommend it.

one more LAST thing - in the part about backing up your nand it doesn't mention HOW the guy got to the menu that has bootmii and the other options. if you watch the video it looks like he goes into the cIOS installer to do it but what you do is press the home button and it brings up that menu. simple stuff really but i was so scared of bricking my wii that i wasn't too keen on just pressing buttons to see what happened.

My hbc was also upside down. Still is, but I don't care really. I don't actually use it!

I used bootmii to backup nand just fine using the power buttons etc.

But I do agree you need to read it word for word. Skip one little bit and you'll get all sorts of problems.

In order to load bootmii killabyte, just go to home brew channel and then press home / select BootMii. If you installed Bootmii as boot2, then you just need to have a sd card with bootmii on it when you boot the wii!

hmm... mine told me i couldn't install/use/whatever boot2. there's so much different stuff to keep up with. IOS, bootmii, priiloader and then neo something. really confused as to what does what and how to actually play a backup.

there is some new channel that shows up as neo something that says dvdr. i was hoping it was going to be as simple as burning the wii game to dvdr and popping it in and using that to play it.

that's it damn it. work be damned, i'm going to hit up the wiki right now and hopefully figure out what all that stuff is for.

the dvd channel is neogamma. Try running it, it should load neogamma. You then just insert the dvd-r and press A to boot the dvd... I don't think you've fully read the instructions... they're sooooo simple?

BootMII wont install on boot2 on newer WII's. You need an older WII (like mine) to install as boot2 and run off SDcard. I already got Bootmii on a SDcard, using a 1TB WD drive, and ConfUSBLoader. Fantastic!! It even downloads Boxcovers for each game to view. Mine is modded though..so I had no issues installing any of this.

i did read 'em it just never says what you do to play a back up. i was dicking around with punch out a little while ago but i've been sitting here reading for the last 2 hours trying to figure out how to get super mario bros to work. i've read through the thread where you posted a lot but i'm fucking confused.

there are all these ios files to install yet that guide says to never uninstall ios60 or you'll brick your wii. i'm not able to make a back up of my nand since i dont have a gamecube controller handy so i'm scared to start installing stuff left and right. i grabbed New_Super_Mario_Bros_Wii_USA_main.dol_FiX_Wii-iND and patched my iso and tried it but it still won't work. when i try to load it from the neogamma channel i get a green screen as it goes to launch the game and it reboots the wii. if i try from the disk channel it just says something about a disc error.

been trying to figure out how to install uloader but i can't seem to find out if i need to uninstall priiloader first nor do i see a wad file in the uloader stuff i downloaded so i don't really know how to install it either. i realize all these kids are just johnny-on-the-spot with their wii hacking but i really can't keep my nose in a computer monitor for hours at a time trying to make heads or tails of this stuff. i wish someone would make a simple guide that explains what all this stuff does and what kind of risk is associated with it.

i've seen several different ios files and a dop-ios file mentioned to get NSMB working but there's really no explanation about them or whether. also it seems in every different menu i look in i see a different ios version is installed. i dont really know what damn ios version i'm running now. i thought i was on 60 but neogamma says 249, the version listed in the HBC says 3.7 (i think, it's 3.something).

hell i'll admit it, i'm just confused.

i would like to add for anyone in the future who searches or looks here for info that this is a good read as it kind of assures me that i can dick around with the ios files without ruining my wii as long as i dont mess with the lower digit ones as mentioned.

Super Mario Bros is wierd...I have the same setup on my Wii as my friend, he has a bitch trying to get it to work and I just popped the thing in and it works flawless, my and my bf are on the 2nd world now. It's my bf who has softmoded both ours and our friends, still it does not even start for him.

seems it's happening that way for a lot of people. tell your buddy to try this fix

New_Super_Mario_Bros_Wii_USA_PROPER_FiX_Wii-iND

i used that patch (didn't use wiiscrubber on it, just the patch) and installed ONLY the IOS file in the wad folder in this release

new_super_mario_bros_wii_req.ios.truncha_fix_wii-ind

and it started working for me. i dont know if it was a combination of the two or if it just started working for whatever reason, but i've been playing it with no problems after doing these 2 steps. nothing else worked for me.

I intend to use this guide to softmod my friend's Wii in a couple of weeks, I've gone through it and it seems very easy. My friend told me his Wii is at 3.3x something around that.

1) Do I do all the shiznit first and leave the firmware update for the end ? And which version to update to ? 4.1 ? And stay there in the future ?

2) After the firmware update I do the HBC update online ?

3) Do we really need priiloader ? (He's only interested in games, not changing the menu and shit like that.)

do it exactly as stated in the guide:
Quote:
4. UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM MENU VERSION (OPTIONAL)

This step is optional unless you are on 3.3 or 3.4, you may upgrade now if you wish, boot2 v4 owners cannot downgrade! but can upgrade if you want. If you want to update to 4.1 then make sure you have at least 250 blocks free or you will brick, install IOS60-patched first (step 5a), then run Firmware Updater 4.1. If you are on 3.3 or 3.4 then you must update now - DO NOT install priiloader until you have updated as it will cause untold problems!.

do NOT use the official wii wupdate, but the firmware updater app in the homebrew channel!
and yes, just stay with 4.1 until something comes along that requires you to update to a newer fw.

Quote:
2) After the firmware update I do the HBC update online ?

yup

Quote:
3) Do we really need priiloader ? (He's only interested in games, not changing the menu and shit like that.)

while it can be useful, your friend won't miss it.

yup, what bushwacka said

as far as the priiloader goes the only reason i installed it was because of the options to turn on region free gaming and block updates from newer titles that could potentially brick the system. i'm sure there's another way to go about doing those 2 things but that just seemed easy and convenient to me and cut out having to read and research.

i think there's an option in priiloader to turn it off so it only boots into that if you hold down the reset button while powering up.
