No, not a joke. You tube allows viewing videos in 720p. Just add
Code:
&fmt=22

to the video, and if it was uploaded at a 720p resolution or more, you'll see it properly. Bandwidth is still low, but it's still much better.

For instance, compare

Update:

Youtube will start offering 1080p next week.

Yeah I had my doubts myself, but I downloaded the MP4 file, and info says indeed 1280x720. But the file is only 27MB Laughing But still tons better.

That's a heck of a lot better than the HQ version!

But apparently it's not new (old experiment), hence the very old x264 version (core 54 is about 19 months old!!!).

They're using AAC as well but the bitrate seems unnecessarily high, though it's only about 10% of the video bitrate.
The music is nice too. Smile

It works only on source material that has been uploaded in a 720p resolution and higher. Other videos are just resized (badly). Check the two videos I have posted above. If you want, I can find more.

I've uploaded a 720p MPEG4 video and its not worked :-/ I'll try MKV 720p to make sure i've done it right.

But both of those videos you've linked so far are partner videos?

I'll look for a non-partner video.

Fullscreen Flash videos run choppy on my computer. I've got enough power (core2duo) and 720p quicktime and mkv files run great. But this flash videos in the browser run like crap if I resize them. But there is no sense to watch a 720p video in a 320x240 pixel window :/ Any idea? My graphicscards drivers are uptodate. Even videos with bad quality are choppy when I go fullscreen. Any ideas`?

Well, the first and most obvious is to update to Flash 10, but I doubt that this is the cause. Check if you have HW acceleration ticked in Flash settings. Also, what browser are you using?

if a high quality video is uploaded, isnt there automatically an option to select high quality right under the video screen ? (bottom right)

That High Quality caption is really not that good at all actually. It's still better than the old format Youtube used to have, but
Code:
&fmt=18

is still much better (h264 480x360 + stereo), and the 720p format is clearly better than both.

You sure you are not mistaking it with the "Watch in High Quality?" Youtube has never offered 720p content officially before.
