It spins up but...other than that it does nothing...

It is a Seagate 1TB 7200.11..I have read many reviews how these drivers fail but this was my fourth drive from them to first fail, I still run 250GB that I bought 3 years ago

This drive I bought on 8/22/2008..little more then a year and its already dead

EDIT : After reading about this stuff..Its certain my HDD is affected by firmware bug, Seagate provides free data recovery for people with it but I don't want to risk sending the HDD back with all the movies, games, and all other crap...

I decided to fix it myself with this here Very Happy

Just ordered all the parts...we will see

you can try that old trick, throw it in the freezer overnight and then plug it in and copy off as much data as you can.

i would get the stuff off the hdd with some recovery program first. So if anything goes wrong (didnt watch the video so dont know what can go wrong) you still have your precious binairy codes

Since BIOS/windows cant recognize the hdd, I can;t really do any backup at all. I read that the files remain intact but im not sure when I update firmware if files get deleted or not

If I get my hdd to work, i will copy all the files before upgrading the firmware anyhow

i once smashed my drive, it was unaccesable and windows couldnt find it. Then i used file scavenger and could get small things like pictures back. There were alot of broken segments so i couldnt get any movies or something big back but since you didnt drop you should be able to get everything back

I had a similar problem, albeit with a smaller drive (320). It turned out to be power supply problem, my PC didn't have enough power to power up the drive...

They should remain intact. I have a HDD that is from that series and I updated the firmware and all data was there. No corruption or data loss.

Good luck with the repairs.
