|
 |
I've been to Brussels once, so only want to go back there if Ghent, Antwerp or Bruges are not worth checking out.
I'm not looking to spend too much- I know the Euro is strong but hotels seem cheapest in Antwerp, followed by Ghent, and lastly Bruges which I've heard is a bit of a
tourist trap anyway.
We will want to eat outside of the direct "I'm going to rip off the tourist" centre areas, so being able yo walk 10 minutes and get affrdable restaurants is important.
We will probably check out some
museums / cathedrals but we're not THAT fussed in the arts and may prefer just to walk around,
drink coffees, eat good food and relax
etc.
Can anyone make any suggestions?

Well I didn't think Brussels sucked. I _loved_ the beer, and the chocolate. And the architecture was pretty cool, specially around the square. And the friendly people, etc.
Shame you are suggesting the most expensive option though!
My alternative, is another (4th) trip to Paris... but i dont really wanna lol

I think Bruges looks very exciting and I have been to Brussels. Granted it was a trip where most of the day consisted on talking to members of the european parliament or some NATO dude, but it felt like any other city to me.

neither one of the cities is a bad choice
i have been to Brussels several times but there is always something new to discover
the Belgium capital is bilingual although French dominates
if you choose Brussels go to the restaurant "Weinstube Fallstaff" if it still exists
by all means avoid "Manneke Pis" lol
other interesting part is "De Nieuwe Markt"
i think you could say Brugge is the Venice of Belgium, i had a boat trip there that showed the old parts of the town from the waterfront
lots of very old buildings and other cultural things
been to Antwerp several times
loved the train station and Stadsfeestzaal Meir, lots of nice pubs
this can't be a bad choice either

i dont usually go to bruges but from the times i was there i pretty much saw everything tourist like seeing in less then a day. Dont know much about antwerp. Ghent is great. Not just because i live there. During the week its a bit nicer cause all the students go out but its still a very alive city in the weekends.
You have the churces, gravensteen, korenmarkt, vrijdagmarkt, groentenmarkt, ...
And offcourse alot of bars
You can offcourse do 2 cities cause from ghent youll be in antwerp or bruges in 40 mins with the train

lol i would go to amsterdam in a shot. the reason behind belgium is the eurostar are doing a £90 two return tickets to Paris, Lille, or any Belgium station. £45 for a return from London is really good so I fancied a weekend away.
Looks like we won't actually get to go until next year now anyway -as it's selling fast and i'm waiting for the lady to get home before booking!
