Ghosts 'n' Goblins. Anything harder than that almost certainly wasn't made in the past 10 years.

And yeah, modern games are easier than older ones. This is because today's game developers care more about profit than quality.

Obviously none of you children ever played the original Battletoads for the NES, as it's the only game that fits the title of "hardest game ever". Smile

EDIT: ^ That is also correct.

What the hell are you talking about. If developers cared less about quality they would just up the stats of enemies to make the game last longer and ship it like that. Like in all the old games, to make it last longer they increased the difficulty, otherwise you would complete it in about an hour.

Where is your logic? Difficulty does not = quality. Alot of the bigger developers spend way more time on tweaking difficuly levels then the old developers. They want people to be able to progress but have a challenge.

My vote goes to the last level on farcry, on hard it took me about 50 tries. But none of the game was really easy, it was just right throughout most of the game in my opinion.

Some of the older console games really take the cake as far as "hardest game ever." There are a few that I've never gotten close to beating. Recently, though, I remember taking three days (with 5 people playing) in our dorm to beat Capcom vs. SNK 2 (Rugal final boss). Dude just whupped our asses all day long.

Umm... Far Cry, the volcano was ridiculous. I also remember chucking my joystick playing TIE Fighter on the hardest level. System Shock was just insane. Pretty much any old Nintendo game would give you hours of controller-throwing frustration.

I tend to agree with the fact that games got easier as time progressed. It's because most of the time now, it's one level or one puzzle or one thing you just can't seem to get past. In the old days, you were getting jacked in level one... By the time you beat Contra a few times, you were a button-mashing demi-god.

Generally, to find some of the hardest games, just look at the old coin-op machines designed with no other purpose than to show pretty graphics and take your money Smile.

Anyone played Ninja Gaiden for xbox? Fucking hard as hell. I don't like the idea of having to pull 100 hit combos and if you screw the combo up you die. Also there were barely any save points. And the camera sucks ass. Threw my controller quite a lot of times and made me swear a lot too.

I don't find an impossible game like that fun. But I do like a challenge. Far Cry was a great game and it was hard. When I got past a hard part it felt like I acomplished something. With Ninja Gaiden I'll get past the hard part but then as soon as I get past that there's another hard as hell part.

I remember Battletoads. Such a great game. Played it all the time when I went over my friend's house. 2 player was so much fun. Oh that reminds me. The Metal Slug games are also quite hard but very fun.

I'd have to say King of fighters series especially Rugal he is a major pain in the ass and maybe Super street fighter 2:Grand master challenge the A.I and new moves just made that game so goddam tough if your not proficient at doing the specials/combos and Gouki/Akuma is one badass muthaf*cker!. Also Streets Of Rage 3 was a bitch even on normal difficulty.

I'd agree with whoever said UT2k4 on Godlike as well even though i didnt find it as tough as maybe you *Cough Wink and Aliens V Predator unpatched was a bitch with the lack of saves and the keypad of the near last level of Sanitarium goddamn i had a hell of a time trying to get through that.

I beat Far Cry and many other hard games in 2 weeks or less. Doesn't that make them not hard? BTW dRPeppir I'm on the mission after the 18 wheeler level with the blue container thing. How far am I?

Also Godlikez thank you for mentioning Sanitarium. That was such a great overlooked adventure game. I have a curse with that game Sad . First time I got it, it wasn't working right with my CD-ROM drive so I had to return. Later I got a new CD-ROM drive and it worked and I beat it. Sadly though my comp was a POS and a lot of the videos were skipping. I got a new comp and wanted to reinstall it on it so I can play it again and see those videos without them skipping. I go to install it and one of the cds is totally broken cause of the piece of crap case. But finally I found it online and downloaded it.

No, it just means you played it almost non-stop either that or on easy.

I thought we were looking for the hardest game of all time, not impossible games. Making a game extremely hard but possible, is alot harder then making an impossible game.

What about some old text games like ZORK and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Old RPG's were hard as hell too. Bards Tale anyone? By the time I beat it I had like 20 pages of graph paper with the maps drawn out on them. No one has experiences the ultimate in tedium until they have mapped out a RPG by hand.

I think a distinction should be made between Hard games and Frustrating games. Anyone can make a frustrating game. Most 2d console games weren't hard as much as frustrating. Eg. you have to do every little thing *exactaly right* (like ghosts and goblins for instance). Games like that have mostly diassapeared. For a good reason too: they just suck.

Frustrating: Game that is unnecessarily difficult to disguise the utter lack of playable content. The game forces the player to rehash the same sections ad nauseum otherwise the entire game could be completed in minutes. (Ghosts and Goblins, Battle Toads, most early 2d scrollers. Medal of Honor sniper slayfests.

Hard: Game that is challenging, smart, complicated, and difficult as a result of a challenging game environment not a lack of content. (FarCry, Half-Life, Ghost Recon, System Shock 2)

*most incoherent post ever*
