For the first time, Games Workshop’s globally renowned Warhammer 40,000 universe is to be realised in a feature-length movie on DVD.
Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques. Games Workshop is delighted to be working with UK-based production company Codex Pictures, who have the momentous task of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the screen.
Commenting on the news, Erik Mogensen, Licensing and Acquired Rights Manager for Games Workshop, said, “Over the years, we have been approached again and again by all sorts of producers and film companies wanting to take our intellectual property to the screen. We have always believed that, in the right hands, the stories, themes and characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe would lend themselves perfectly to the movie genre. We’re working closely with the talented team at Codex Pictures, who have an excellent understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property and an inspired vision for the movie. We can’t wait to see our universe come to life on-screen.”
“We’re hugely honoured to be making Ultramarines,” said a spokesman for Codex Pictures. “It’s taken a lot of research and development to get to this stage – and it’s such an exciting challenge to be able to bring the depth and power of the Warhammer 40,000 universe to a brand new medium.”
News of the production of a movie was unveiled at UK Games Day, the biggest event in the Games Workshop calendar, on Sunday, September 27 2009.
I'm glad it's CGI, I don't think it would have worked very well as live action.

That totally makes the mighty Black Templars Chapter looks utterly frick'n GHEY!!!!!!! Plus that black d00d on the right has his head photoshopped on making it equally formage. Blasphemous demanding tremendous and UBIQUITOUS amounts of hideous DEATH!!!!!!
hehe.. I mod for the Dawn of War game and the Black Templars mod would get a chuckle outta that shot. Har Har..

Ultramarines are just the most known by people not to familiar with the WH40k universe.
I'd rather see something like the Space Wolves, Blood Angels or to go a bit further some Deathwatch or Grey Knights because let's face it, Space Marines are fanatics but the thre Inquisition "chapters" of the Ordo Malleus, Ordo Xenos and Ordo Hereticus are jsut the worst of all
btw. can anybody not say yay to a well made Mechwarrior/Battletech movie?
I was signing up, and notice the "Over 13" check... So what, a Warhammer 40,000 PG13 flick?
Of flipping course it's PG13. This wh40k we're talking about. The greatest thing about 40k was the (relatively) dark and gritty universe everybody lived in. The fluff did a good job of bringing it off the page and into your imagination... it was a fantasy. The film can't explicitly recreate the things we imagined, because they'd be 15+ or 18+. Not their target market unfortunately.
So it's gonna have a big challenge to be friendly to both sides of that... conflict.

Yeah get used to this folks: movies like games are becoming PINK-O'ed so they appeal to more people. It then allows more distribution thus more profits. Very tragic commentary on the times we live in when we continue to dumb everything down to make more $$$.

Just noticed that the script is written Dan Abnett; have to say, my hope is somewhat restored, and we might actually see something good. Dan Abnett has written some of the best material for the universe, and I am now looking forward to it.
Looks like they are using some very cutting-edge technology.

the thing never looked good, i was always surprised this generated THAT much interest to begin with, and that everyone else didnt just skip over it without paying it much mind like i did - even the first teaser looked like a very low budget independent stv type movie.
dont get me wrong, i still want to see it... i mean it should be fun, with some cool action sequences, but meh.. it never looked anything more than a low end amateurish cgi feature...
