Red Faction for one. Check out YouTube for its glass capabilities and destruction -> that one is from 2001. Splinter Cell had cloth physics in 2003. You can all you want, it's all bullshit.

I played Red Faction back in 2001 and yes it was amazing. I didn't play Splinter Cell.

However what does the "oh, it has been done before" mean? Trespasser had bump mapping in 1998. Does this make Doom 3 any less impressive in 2004?

I really want to see what's your response in the following question:

Why does Batman run like a slideshow in PhysX software mode?

a) Because PhysX is a shit coded piece of crap.
b) Because Rocksteady deliberitaly made the CPU waste cycles so as to slow down the game if you haven't an nvidia card.

What is it? a or b?

Take a look at some tech demos of Havok and what it can do on the CPU alone. Now imagine the possibilities when Havok moves to OpenCL. Now look at your paper shoving Batman. Laughing

I have seen them but I never trust tech demos. When the first games using such advanced effects in Havok appear, if they require a fairly new GPU and/or perform slow in software mode, I'll remind you of this post.

its amazing how you guys keep talking about papers floating around, when in fact it is the least of the actual stuff using physix. You didn't watch the last video linked to above i guess. There is a LOT more than floating papers.

Anyway,

You don't seem to get it. People who bought Nvidia didn't pay any extra for physx, it's just another nice feature we got with the card. So you got tricked into getting ATi for a gimmicky DX10.1 which was used properly 1 time (?), and people who bought Nvidia got Physx, which is now widely used in AAA titles. Don't bash Nvidia, but blame people who tricked you into buying ATi.

Lol, what's with the paper shoving ? There are other effects, like the reactive smoke/fog, the multi-debris destruction in 7-8 set-piece locations and a lot others. (still, it is an afterthought in Baman)

The point isn't if this has been done, the point is to do it in hardware.

Also, why dream about OpenCL Havok and use it as an argument ? If ATI gets ahead with its Stream thingy, it's gonna be in at least 1-2 years, by then we'll buy whatever gfx card is good atm. And atm Nvidia is the best.

We're not fanboys, we're gonna buy ATI if it gets better (drivers, anyone?) If anyone is a fanboy, it's you with your bitterness.

The point was, if Havok does so much more in CPU today, what it will do in OpenCL will be much more impressive. Also, this has nothing to do with fanboism; in the last few days I've been as far as possible from ATI fanboy. In fact, this has nothing to do with ATI. It's nVidia doing bullshit to get people to buy their stuff. This is about nVidia gimping a bad physics engine even more to only work well with its hardware. PhysX has never been impressive, and me buying GTX 300 (just an example Laughing) won't change my opinion.

We'll believe it when we see it. So far of all the games that use Havok only Red Faction 3 has some advanced physics, though part of the calculations are done by the company's GeoMod engine.

This is the case because most UE3 games use the defaul PhysX that comes with the engine. Not a lot of companies feel the need to spend even more money on another physics engine like Havok. Indeed, this is the major problem for Havok; they charge money. If they were to do the smart thing - bundle it with other software for money, but offer it for free for single projects - you will see much more stuff using it.

I'm curious to see what advancements in physics and physics gameplay Valve will make in their future games. Apparently Gabe Newell is a big fan of intel's Larrabee and since intel owns Havok, I can only imagine that it will be a great physics solution.

Of course, that's why I mentioned the company. Though their games haven't got any impressive physics effects anymore, at least they offer innovative physics gameplay.

Well, you have to remember, the source hasn't really advanced at all since 2004. Sure, it has some new blurs and fake HDRs, etc, but it's hardly impressive anymore. Art style, perhaps, but the engine itself is very dated, and so is the physics engine. Smile

What's fake about Valve's method of HDR?

L4D scales very well on multicores, so at least this update was a major one.

Their implementation of HDR and tone mapping works only on 8-bit RGBA as opposed to 64-bit floating point precision. You might say "but it is all rendered at 8-bit anyway on the screen", but consider this: when working with high precision, all calculations are done in that precision, and at the end they are down-converted to the lower precision (in our case, 64-bit floating point vs. 8-bit integer); it is very similar to numerical calculations done in high precision and then rounded to lower precision, vs. working in low precision all the time.

It's a very fun action game. Come on, everyone likes Batman.

@ Leo
They had their reasons. Isn't it to be able to do HDR and AA simultaneously on older Nvidia cards ? Also, isn't it much faster this way ? The end result is good, that's what matters.

It's probably a great game if you like that sort of thing, but being almost 40 then I think my interest in superheroes left me a long time ago Smile

They did it because they wanted to be able to have it run on PS2.0 cards. It is arguably understandable when first introduced, but please, in 2009 it's a damn hack of clever thinking and nothing more. It looks nowhere as deep as other implementations (who use higher precision techniques). AA + real HDR has been possible since X1X00 cards. Smile

You also forgot to mention that physx isn't even needed in this game. I play with the game off, Oh look, a table snapped in half when I threw someone on it, oh look at batman kicking that trashcan/soda can around.

ya...really need physx to break some tiles! Ageia had good intentions, they wanted to have a dedicated card to process in game physics to take the load off of the GPU, the only problem of it was there was never any physics happening, mostly just some bullshit eye candy. Like in GRAW, you threw a grenade and out pops rubble, but it didn't actually take a chunk out of the street.

Even worse, when ageia owned physx, they allowed you to off the shit to the CPU, I used to do that with sacred II and let my GPU worry about the gfx and my cpu the physics, well can't fucking do that anymore thanks to nvidia, along with not being able to use my physx card ( I got it free ) cause they now fucking locked it out.

Havok or Geomod all the way.
