Not really into my hardware but just need an answer:

Which is better?

ATI Radeon 3850 512MB or a Geforce 7950 GX2 1GB ?

It's for my son, just making up a shitty system for him but good enough to play games with.

get him a 9800GT, its the same exact thing as an 8800GT and is still damn good at running recent games (running batman on full with 1440x900 with like 50FPS on average)

is cheap too
