yeah I watched the blizzcon stream this afternoon on a talk on sc2. It turned out to be pretty much all about battlenet.

It seems like blizz took cues from all the developments in the pc gaming market in the last few years, as well as the social networks like fb/my space and etc. The new battlenet seems to be a more smooth version of steam. They worked a lot to make it more social orientated though, with some features such as being able to give your friends on battlenet your own alias. I really like this feature because for games that I have not played in months, like GW or games on steam, I have a lot of friends who I dont remember. I know I have a friend from here and there and we did this and that, but I dont remember their random nicknames anymore. They said they took this cue from google talk where you were able to assign your friends your own names instead of seeing their name/email all the time.

you will be able to communicate with people playing other Blizz games such as the future D3 and WoW through Battlenet.

on the topic of achievement, the reward for unlocking them is the ability to unlock more avatars for your account on battlenet. You can unlock symbols which will show up on your units during gameplay (kind of like warhammer I think).

On the issue of protection, it seems that they are planning on making battlenet a very internet orientated service. If you are not connected to the internet, you will have to be signed in as a guest and be in offline mode. You can only play single player in this mode and can't unlock achievements.

you will also need to authenticate your copy through an internet connection. At the conference, some people booed at this haha. It's going to be interesting to see if blizzard can use the internet authentication smoothly, and weather or not you need to authenticate to activate the offline guest mode (I think you do?).

that system could be GREAT in diablo III, I personally hate steam, but I love the new steam community feature, I add a lot of my games to the steam launcher just to use the chat stuff

The new Battle.net looks sweet and i really like that i can chat to my friend if he is playing SC2 and im playing WoW at the same time. Really like that and the achievements will get me hooked on the games even more because im a achievement whore but one thing i didnt see. Just point it out if you saw it. They talked about shared achievement points. If i log in with my Battle.net account to SC2 can i check out all of my previously earned achievements in WoW? and if i log in to WoW can i see somehow what achievements i have earned in D3 and SC2. Just some braging rights in lets say open channel in D3 and you forgot the achievment name so u can easily check it out and even link it. Will that be possible??

oh wow just saw part of the presentation on the new game editor. they made a third person shooter out of it! the build they were playing did not have mouse support but apparently it has already been made and is possible from the map editor. it was pretty much starcraft ghost from SC2 map editor haha.

edit: and they are makign a pseudo lan mode. this is why people reserve judgment when it comes to blizz.

That doesn't necessarily mean you will get comparable to Windows results. From my testings (universal binaries vs. Windows native), OS X had considerably lower results in GPU related tests (games, video playback, etc) on the same machine with same hardware.

That's because of Cider engine - a WINE-based wrapper upon DirectX, Win APIs. Since switch to Intel, there were practically no native ports of games to Mac OS X.

Here is part of the bundle contents of Puzzle Quest Mac Cider port

PQ folder contains basically the PC version, you can manually install patches from Windows version and even use cracks.
There are even hooks to store Windows registry in a flat files Very Happy
Sometime it's even possible to run other games by placing game's files and renaming .exe file


But native builds are very good, for example Doom 3. I played it on a Mac cause my old PC - AMD Athlon 64(don't remember the Ghz); 1GB RAM; 7800GTX couldn't handle it, but an iMac played it just fine on High settings Smile

So far Blizzard have been doing native builds. They even released a patch for Diablo 2 to make it work on later versions of Mac OS X as Apple removed 256 indexed color mode in drivers. So, I believe a couple of years old iMac should handle StarCraft 2. I think in this case the amount of VRAM is more important than raw GPU power and it will be the main limiting factor as older Macs usually have < 256 MB VRAM.

Like I said, I compared native games (with Universal binaries, for maximum performance), not some emulation crap. Doom 3, Prey and BioShock were among the tested games, as well various media players. All lagged behind their Windows counterparts. Sadly, I have not had the time to do the same with Linux applications, but I believe the situation will be much better because of continuously updated drivers.

I believe so, yes, but of course don't take my word for it. It is best to either try the demos (or full games Wink) for both platforms and see which work best.

Oh, I wasn't sure what you meant by Universal binaries. At glance, Cider ports are Universal too Very Happy


Need to check bundle contents to be sure.

I didn't tried Mac versions of Prey and BioShock, only Doom 3 and at naked eye comparison it run great. Did you measured the FPS ? What was the difference ?

Agree on Linux ports, with so many Linux nerds and zealots tweaking it everyday it definately should have better drivers Laughing

But in general, if someone is into games, it would be better to have a standalone PC or console. More convenient this way. I settled for Apple notebook + desktop PC combo. I will stop upgrading PC as soon as there will be console with native support for keyboard and mouse and Turn Based Strategy games, mods support would be nice too Smile

hehe I've been spoiled wth my desktop so now I can't stand any FPS games that doesn't have 50-60 FPS. there is just too much stuttering at 25 for me =/
