So, i'm using a Logitech 5.1 Z906 surround system.

On my previous mobo (which also had realtek HD) , when i plugged in the cables it was

center/subwoofer
front speakers
rear speakers

Now on the new mobo it's..

center/subwoofer
front speakers
side speakers

I tried all the combinations i could think of, and the only time i manage to make them actually work is if i select 7.1 and they act as rear speakers, however the 2 additional side-speakers are there as fakes (can't hear anything when i test them since obviously they don't exist).

Every time i try 5.1 it just grays out the rear speakers and the sides don't do anything (used to be rear before and they worked just fine).

I'm just worried about sound in movies etc since they don't seem to do much even when 7.1 and they're working properly.

In games i can clearly see them working fine because i hear what's behind me in the rear speakers (when 7.1 is selected)

Any ideas wtf?

If I recall correctly, in Windows playback device settings, you should be able to configure which speaker pair you have when you select 5.1 setup (it's under "Configure" button on the bottom left of the playback device list).

In general, however, it shouldn't matter. Games and movies outputting at 5.1 should output to those speakers if you have your audio driver configured as 5.1. I am not sure they differentiate between their listed locations.

EDIT: If you haven't already, you should get the Realtek audio manager software and check the connector options. You should be able to select what each connected speaker is treated as (if you are using analog connection) by clicking on the connector icons.

I tried that (what you said in the edit) and i can only select line in and side speakers, whereas before i had a huge list to choose from.

I'm really confused :s

Have you tried updating the drivers or if you're comfortable with it even updating the bios?

Here's the base downloads for your motherboard.
https://uk.msi.com/product/mb/Z97_GAMING_5.html#download

And then here you can see the latest version available.
http://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/

Would be this for Realtek.

From searching it seems you have a RT ALC1150 codec and it's used with some Sound Blaster Cinema 2 function. (Couldn't find a download for that thing.) which I guess you could also open and see if you can't configure it better. Smile
(Such as if it's using virtual surround or some other "enhancement" that's could be causing this problem.)

Ye it's got SBC2 but that's separate if you want enhancements. Tried changing things in it but it's almost exactly like the realtek HD audio manager interface. Same thing really.

Screw it i guess, i won't touch the bios for a minor thing like this, thanks for the help though, guess i'll just leave it like this for now.

EDIT: nevermind fixed it, some jacks were put in the wrong place and i realized that once i tried using the mic and seeing there's no mic but with 4 jacks in.Switched them around and now my rear speakers work as side speakers. So 5.1. Weird mobo cause on the other one the jacks had to be put in exactly where they had to be otherwise nothing would work, and in this case they did. O well.
