Idea really easy. but this only works if the original motherboard and harddrive still work. so put it back together. for newbies, go to control panel, double-click the system icon, go to hardware tab, and click device manager button. find the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS and expand the tab. not the primary or secondary controller, but right-click the first controller. choose update driver. choose the option to install from a list or specific location. click next. now choose the (don't search. I will choose the driver to install) option. click next. now highlight the Standard Dual Channel Pci Ide Controller. click next. the Standard controller will install. now reboot. log in. the standard controller is completely installed. you can now shutdown the computer, remove your motherboard, install the new one, and it will boot with the new motherboard. i've done this 24 times total on 12 different computers. it works. Rolling Eyes the standard controller works with all motherboards. new or old.

how is that supposed to work, won't windows install the chipset specific drivers after the reboot again? And how can you do that 24 times on 12 computers, that makes no sense Confused it is much smarter to install the new drivers for the new motherboard before changing the board.

Don't you think MS would have described that method in their KB if it is that easy? Anyways, here is what MS offers for this problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314082
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316401
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125

Quote:
Although Microsoft does not support this method, you can import or merge the required registry entries, and copy the drivers beforehand to support all IDE controllers that are natively supported by Windows XP. Note that although this method might enable the relocated system disk to start successfully, other hardware differences can lead to other problems.

first off, Microsoft doesn't know the answers to all of their problems. if they did, then computers wouldn't have the problems in the first place. how do you think hackers and others always find security holes or flaws in programs and operating systems. Because microsoft doesn't know about it until they see it posted somewhere or someone tells them. and this is a quote from one of those links you gave----" copy the drivers beforehand to support all IDE controllers that are natively supported by Windows XP. " the standard controller is a universal driver for all motherboards. and no. windows wont install a new chipset driver after reboot. to answer again. i have access to 12 computers. i took my two different brand harddrives--- 120 gig maxtor & 80 gig seagate --- , with the help of my younger brother who is also MICROSOFT CERTIFIED, and one by one replaced the original harddrives in all 12 computers. thats 2 new drives per computer. each drive went through the steps i explained above. and they all boot up and run with no problems no matter what motherboard was in the case. duh. im not retarded you know. and to go further on. the computer im using right now went through the process. this computer has an intel chipset in it. but this harddrive came from a computer with a via chipset. while in the via computer, i installed the standard controller. rebooted. put the drive in this intel computer. it booted with no problems. and that was about 2 months ago. still no problems. Arrow MICROSOFT DOESN'T KNOW EVERYTHING. and im smarter than the average bear.
