|
 |
I'm going to be taking a week off to travel abroad but the thing is while I've travelled alone before it's always been locally and within the country.
Which place would you guys suggest for a person travelling alone to enjoy? I'd prefer tropical climate where the weather is nice and hot (don't like the rains or winter) and somewhere modern.
I'll be travelling either in the first two weeks of August or in September. All depends on which place is good at what time, pricing etc etc etc.
Thanks
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Most of Hawaii is pretty nice. Skip Oahu though since its overcrowded and mostly just the place where people live.

Thailand, Koh Samui, Koh Phnang and Koh Tao (if you like diving). Actually, Koh Tao is my favourite island of the three even if you don't like diving. Lots going on, you can easily meet people, etc.

Interesting. Enough stuff to see there to last me a week? What else to do there?

Nice, these places are nearer to India and would save me money. I love swimming, never done diving tho. Would I need to buy equipment or can I rent it? Plus what about the language issue? Do many people speak English there?
1 and 2 are still amazing.

If you are saying prices, then hawaii will be quite an expensive journey I guess. Sadly I don't know any tropical place so I won't be able to suggest anywhere
Europe (<3) in the summer is not rainy nor cold though

Hawaii is really cheap when you consider prices for once you get there. And flying from Heathrow last time I did it was only $1000.
As for what to do there is a lot to do. Maui is my favorite island and has awesome diving/surfing/anything water related. Maui also has plenty to do on land as it has a 11k foot mountain in the middle. Going from sea level to the top of a high peak is incredible.
Finally there a tons of waterfalls. My favorite is Alelele falls that is hidden and has a nice big pool under it that you can swim in.
It's truly a beautiful place and at the same time you have all the same benefits of being in a normal US state.
I live on Oahu now so I'm a bit spoiled but Hawaii really is worth a visit.

I suggest you stop your search here^
The rest (Hawaii etc) almost requires a group of friends and/or is for families or old farts. It's uber boring. In Thailand you'll find the best spot for yourself - quite or loud, with lotsa young people or without, for diving or not.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

You haven't been to the right places then. Most of the islands besides Oahu are fairly empty.

English is pretty much spoken by everyone, everywhere
Nope you don't need to buy any equipment. If you do a course (such as discover scuba, or if you're feeling it even an open water course), they'll provide all equipment, training etc.
If you chose not to dive, Koh Tao has some lovely lovely lovely places to Snorkel - you'll nearly definately get to swim with black fin reef sharks (100% safe), and turtles (amazing amazing amazing).
Plus everyone is lovely, lots of lone travellers / back packers to get to know too. Koh Tao had a really lovely vibe - the little path / road along the side of the sea was full of lovely bars/restauarnts etc. If you want beach, I can highly recommend a few hotels/areas on Samui / Phangang too.
I know a great dive school on Koh Tao (who also do cliff diving), shoudl you want a recommendation.
Have a great time! Oh, and if you have the money - fly into Koh Samui - don't go to an airport on land and get a boat - wastes wayyy too much time...

I was about to suggest our Mediterranean coasts, but then I noticed that he's looking for "somewhere modern"
We do speak English fluently though!

Well this is starting to sound very tempting and interesting. Could you please recommend some hotels on the Samui / Phangang region and the dive school. Though I wonder how much I'll learn in a week. Thanks

Yuri, in a week you can actually learn open water + advanced open water, qualifying you to 30m. I would recommend however doing just open water, and spending some time doing other things (or just relaxing).
What's your nightly budget re: hotels? That'll help me recommend the best. Also, how old are you? Do you like partying/clubs or more quieter things? Give me some context and I'll pick a good spot.
As for dive schools, I used and highly recommend Good Times Adventures (GTAdventures.com). If you're going to scuba dive, you will have to do it off Koh Tao. Some organised tours will take you from Samui / Phangang however you'll be in a boat half the day. GT adventures boats are really quick - they use twin propella speed boats instead of the usual rice boat crap you normally get. All instructors are fluent english and you never learn in groups of more than 4 (some of the dive schools have one instructor to as many as 12! Don't do this - even if you don't choose GT make sure you don't go with a mass market dive school - you'll spend half your day standing in the shallow sea / hotel pool waiting for others do to practical tests.

Ooooh that sounds divine. Forgot to ask but what's the best time to go there?
I'd prefer to stay in a 3-4 star hotel which is neither too cheap nor too expensive, I guess finding a good balance... 3500baht max maybe covering all expenses in a day... not sure about the pricing, will go on your suggestion. Something mid-tier, offering the best of both worlds. I'm 25 and I don't really party or go to clubs so I'd prefer the quieter stuff. But while on one side I'm curious about the party/club stuff.. I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle it. Maybe if I just dance like Shepard
I'll go with the site you suggested since you're highly recommending it.
Where do I take the flight from at the start? Anyway, I checked the flight prices and it costs 40% more to go from my city to Koh Samui in comparison to my city to Bangkok.
What itinerary would you suggest for the entire week (I can extend a day or two if you think it's wise) Also I forgot to mention that I'm a vegetarian and this link is scaring me a bit:
http://travel.cnn.com/bangkok/eat/vegetarians-guide-thailand-travel-656275
Thanks a lot for your help. You know I was actually thinking of going to New York before but at the distance and money it costs I don't think it is gonna be worth it after what all you told me about Thai. For me Thailand was always about Bangkok and Phuket... didn't know of these places until you mentioned them!
Edit:
Fixed dancing Shepard
1 and 2 are still amazing.

When you look at their dishes, don't you think they suffer enough already?

Thailand if you are a single guy who wants something a little edgy.

Why the fuck would you want to goto India ?
Also if you just want to relax and do the basics of swimming and relaxing on a hot beach. I suggest a Pacific Island.. everybody speaks English + friendly and it does not break the bank.
Cook Islands + Fiji + Samoa + Tonga are all amazing bang for the buck.
Its pretty much 28c all year round

It's not that I want to go to India but I live here so I'm speaking about tickets in terms of departure from my city
Pacific Island sounds nice too although I can't see to find too many flights going there. Very few for some reason.
