I don't mean about Japan , rather films dealing with a particular situation as in a man(or a woman), finds himself in a totally foreign country (adventurer\enslaved\whatever), not knowing its customs, traditions, faces different challenges that he has to overcome, learns the ways of the people of this different culture, probably falls in love with a local princess (or a peasant girl lol) which in turn causes problems, helps the people who eventually become his family to ,say, defend their land\village\country, you name it etc etc

Something like that Wink

Films can be old or even "ancient", it's not a problem.

Avatar,The New World, Outlander (2008) , Outlander (TV series),The 13th Warrior come to mind.

A suggested films list:

Lost in Translation
The Last of the Mohicans
The Bounty
1492 Conquest of Paradise
Kingdom of Heaven
Dances with wolves
Gladiator
Hotel Rwanda
English Patient
Lawrence of arabia
mulan Cool Face (is actually good tho )
Broken Arrow (old)
Ben-Hur
Three Kings
braveheart Razz
Jungle Child
Nowhere in africa
The painted veil
Planet of the Apes Cool Face

The Beast / Beast
Babel
Blade Runner
Under the skin
Marco Polo
seven years in Tibet
The Fifth Element
ET
Finding Nemo
Empire of the Sun
Coming to America
The Mission
Pathfinder
Mongol
The Jungle Book

Lost in Translation? Probably not what you're looking for, but an excellent foreign culture movie nonetheless.

it's dealing with something he can't really cope and slowly becomes a better person as he handles the task at hand.

all of those movies are about a person against his odds coming to terms and becoming something greater than what he was in the beginning.

Avatar and other Pocahontas derivatives Smile

The Beast / Beast of War is a tank film in afganistan, but has some cross cultural stuff

Babel

Blade Runner, if you want to go more universal about humanity

Under the skin, about a demon/succubus wandering in the human world
