This game is awesome!
For a while now i'd lost faith in my PS2, I can't remember being impressed with it's graphics since MGS2 came out. So I mostly use my Xbox.
Well, since Resi 4 was getting such good reviews from every site I guessed there had to be something good about it. It's fantastic, great graphics, story, characters, enemies, interaction, boss battles etc.
There are some fantastic setpieces too, such as being in a house thats getting attacked from all sides, with tons of the infected trying to get in, and you're frantically barricading the doors.. or running into a room shutting the door then shooting through it.. or climbing up a ladder into a barn, kicking the ladder down then jumping thorough a window to escape the hordes... the list is endless.
I'm really impressed, it just goes to show that you can alter a tried and tested formula and have it be far better then the originals without disappointing old fans. I hope they do the same thing with MGS4, gameplay needs a revamp. I can't wait to see what they do with RE5 for the PS3, I might just get one for that game.
Sorry, just had to tell people, i'm having a blast.

yea, re4 is great, its just so different from the other re titles.
the constant sense of fear, knowing that enemies could get in from anywhere at any moment,
makes the game so thrilling, and the shooting just feels right as well.
definitely one of the best games of this generation.

Do you not agree that MGS4 could also benefit from a change of this nature?

Erm, i'd lost faith in the playstations power, i.e it's graphical capability, not in it's ability to entertain. If you even bothered to read more then the second sentence you'd know that. I guess you have a short attention span.
You have no idea what type of gamer I am, sure I like good graphics, but doesn't everyone? Never did I say that graphics are all that matter to me. I mean i'm playing Majesty, Starscape and Mount&Blade at the moment. They definitely arn't on the cutting edge, but the gameplay is good.
Please refrain from making bullshit assumptions in the future.

Yeah judging people based on one sentance, that makes sense. If you're retarded.

I agree that this is a truly awesome game, but not as a RE game but as a game on it's own. This game have erased basicly everything that RE was all about, and that sucks big time from a RE perspective.
The scariness is completley erased. The scary mood is non existent. The action have gone from limited to action, action and some more action. At times this game feels like a shooter!
I like the improvements they have made BUT they could have made these improvements AND kept the core gameplay of the older RE games.
In my opinion, all the other RE games are better than this, with RE2 being the best of them all.
I mean, the reason why I play RE games is because I like walking around in silent big areas with a sweet ass mood, searching for items and keys and shooting 1 or 2 enemies, and never know what will happen, that's why I played all the other RE games.
Why do every game have to be turned into a "shooter"?
Soon those that want some classic gameplay in games will have to stop playing because there's nothing left. :/
This is not the first game to be turned into something different.
Jak comes to mind. The first game was the best platformer ever created in my opinion, and also one of the best games ever created, and what do they do with the sequals? They turn them into some action/driving/shooter games with limited platforming! They took what was limited in Jak1 and made them key elements in the sequals, and almost completley erased all that made the first game so good.
Ratchet & clank is another game that went from platformer with a few guns to complete shooters. These games are still great games (except the last ratchet game which sucks big time), but they could have been godlike if they had kept the core of the gameplay. It's like everything has to be about SHOOTING THINGS these days. :/
I blame the new generation of gamers for this, they only want action, action and some more action.
Remember, I'm not "flaming" RE4 as a game, it's awesome as a game, but it's really pathethic as a RE game. They shuld just have named it something else.
Hopefully RE5 goes back to it's roots WITH the new improvements and the things that were good in the older games.

I'm afraid you're in the minority pallebrun, people want orginality, innovation, variety, enhancement. In short, people like new things. Not some stale rehash of past games. Games developers cater to the majority.
RE was a good game for it's time, but it needed something new. This was it, it worked.
I don't just want to play the same game over again with slightly better graphics. Maybe you want the same thing year after year, most people don't. I've noticed you seem to be against change of any sort, "OMG they can't touch my beloved MGS!", get over it.

I believe I'm not. And I believe that most people that are fans think the same as me.
If it aint broken, dont fix it. And resident evil was far from broken (number of sold copies proves that).
And since you want (or atleast say you want) innovation and originallity, why do you prefear the xbox? The ps2 owns the xbox when it comes to that AnimalMother, the xbox has basicly no original games when compared to the ps2.
I dont know where I have you at times. Now you want innovation and originality, but before that you said that you prefear the xbox and not because of it's graphics, where's the logic in that?
The fact is AnimalMother that you like the same old concept too as long as it's a game that YOU truly like. Just as with me and RE and the game you seem to have shoved up your ass, MGS.
I think your praising of the splinter cell games speaks for itself.
Three games that are all basicly the same (yes, it has minor changes, but so does each RE game and each MGS game) but with graphical improvements in each game. Yet you dont seem to think that those games need some big changes in the gameplay department.
But the third MGS game felt unoriginal and could have done with some major changes.......................
Or take Gothic. You can bet your ass that Gothic 3 will be the same old concept but with new graphics, and you can bet your ass that you will love it.
So much for "In short, people like new things".

lets not say changes, i like the the path mgs series was walking,
but definitely improvements, like added camera views, better controls etc.
i m sure the gameplay will improve alot as its being developed on powerful hardware.

Ha, I enjoyed the first gothic more then the second, purely because the concept was original at the time, it was unique. The second was still good, but not as good because of those specific reasons, same deal with the MGS series. I enjoyed the first the most, the others were too similar for me to get that excited.
As for splinter cell, well the only game out of that series I really played was the latest SC:CT , I played one level of the first and the demo of pandora tomorrow. So really it was my first taste of the game thats why I loved it so much.
If RE4 had just been a rehash of the original games I wouldn't have bothered playing it. I enjoyed the first a hell of alot, and the second was great too, but then it started to get old with RE3.
Gameplay naturally evolves with the hardware, thats just how it is, or would you prefer to still be playing metal gear?
LOL, the PS2 has more original games? Hardly, just a hell of alot of turn based RPG's and sequals. Virtually anything that is original and is any good come out on both platforms anyway, so I know which i'd prefer. The last game I enjoyed on my PS2 prior to RE4 was shadow of rome, that was original too. Maybe if you were talking about the gamecube I could agree with you.
See, I can still appreciate a game, even if it lacks innovation and originality, if it's extremely polished, if it excels in what it does, even if it's been done many times before. FEAR is a good example of this. But if a game has some flaws (e.g. Gothic 1) but is trying something new, and is fun, it doesn't matter.
Without such an interesting story, and movie like presentation, I could never have suffered through MGS3's tired gameplay. Maybe if you're a fanboi you could, but i'm not so meh.
I'm not really a fanboi of any game series at the moment, although I have been in the past. Maybe splinter cell and gothic a bit, but I can admit they have flaws, and splinter cell definitely needs some innovation injecting into it, which I think they're doing with the next one.

yeah i didn't really like what they done to res evil 4, its a good game in its own way, but lost its Res evil feel for me and have no interest in the next if this is the way its going (house of the dead anybody?). Like has been said it seems more of a shooter now and totally agree with pallebrun and his other comments on the other games he mentioned which i feel have been ruined to a certain extent buy tinkering to much with the orginal formula, Tomb raider is another prime example, 1st was great, all exploring, jumping about not much steatlh or shooting humans, then all went downhill from then on.

imo ps2 has alot more original games than the xbox, xbox is just a smaller version of the pc plus
ninja gaiden, cant remember ever hearing of some xbox title in development with just the slightest bit of originality, after all halo is its flagship, that game is one of the most monotone ones i ever played.
on ps2 you get unique games like shadow of the colossus, katamari damacy, god of war, ico,
with shadow of the colossus probably being the most unique game ever made, a real masterpiece.
aside from that ps2 does have a damn lot of sequels, but who cares, these games are great,
i could always play another mgs, tekken or dmc.
sure there are dropouts like dmc 2 sometimes, but most of these sequels are good enough.
the only really good game i played on xbox that wasnt multiplatform was ninja gaiden, what great gameplay. aside from that its usually mostly fps and racing, well maybe the x360 will toss in some diversity this time.

Resident Evil 4 is exactly what the series needed. A swift kick in the ass and change in gameplay that was TIRED and Clunky. It feels more like a Survival horror game with you in control instead of surviving the horror which was the control. I have played through this game 3 times now and am going on a fourth. The weapons and unlockables are worth playing through again and again. The best part is that it becomes more of a action game a few times trhough with the addition of more automatic weapons and a great weapon that makes this game a breeze. If you own a Gamecube and Ps2 go buy the Cube version and progressive scan cable it looks alot better then the Ps2 version. If you just own a Ps2 go grab this game and the Component cables it still shits on everything out there graphically on console. I used this game as a benchmark to compare to the Next Gen games that were coming out. The only game I can compare the AI too in this next gen is Call Of Duty 2. Capcom recently announced a Xbox 360 game using the Resident Evil 4 Engine called LOST PLANET I look forward to more with the BIG 3 Capcom has coming for Xbox 360 Lost Planet, Dead Rising, And Resident Evil 5.

AnimalMother, play the game.
God of war IS technically alot better looking. You cant judge god of war's graphics based on a still screenshot. There is just so much more going on in god of war (so much small things happening around the player) then in RE4, it's just no competition. And the lightning is fricking awesome when you wield your weapon, with light cast on the huge enemies, and this is something you just cant see in a screenshot. Or the huge amount of sand dust that constantly flies around you in those sand levels (like the one in your screen),etc etc. And in progressive mode everything is just gorgeous.
But sure you can enjoy the graphics in RE4 more, just like I enjoy the graphics in jak & daxter more, but technically, god of war crushes everything on the ps2.
Look at a few videos and you will see how it truly looks.
