Think it was around that time, was highly popular. Had Desert levels but not sure if it was the first.

air gallet? fevers sos? gunbird (2?)?
but those should be mid 90s games

no Raiden either, it was a more obscure one. Looked a bit like this one: http://www.mobygames.com/game/last-day_ alas more grittier and color-palette duller.

None of those sadly, as you said they were more modern. Maybe the game was from 1988-1990?
