So my new TV arrived today and I finally have something that supports multichannel pass through via HDMI! Unfortunately my shitty 5.1 system only supports AC3 decoding from optical and not DTS!

So obviously I have a ton of movies that only have DTS and I'd like a nice easy way to convert them on Windows (not all at once, I'll just do it when I want to watch the movie).

Anyone have any tips, the easier the better!

Thanks

What source do you use? If it's a proper PC you can try realtime AC3 encoding with ffdshow.

This looks perfect but the developers website no longer seems to work and I can't get the audio tools to download from within the tool either Sad!

It converts on the fly to AC3 and outputs it to your receiver/decoder.

But that's not going to work on a raspberry pi? Pretty sure doing a pure conversion is the only way to go..

Do you mean stream as in over a network? Most DLNA servers support real-time transcoding as well, although I had aspect ratio issues with some of them with transcoding active.

I mean over a network but via Samba not DLNA, I probably shouldn't have called it streaming Wink!

:edit:

The tools finally downloaded without dying part way through! Trying some conversions now.

Ah, well in that case I guess you will indeed have to convert the files...

Why not try DLNA though? Seems like an easier solution for the files to just be there rather than converting them manually every time you watch something.

I can script the conversions easily enough, setting up a DLNA server feels like a bigger pain in the ass.

Use Plex Media Server. It supports DLNA. Just point it to your dirs with the content and it will process changes there and show your content.

Looks like I could stream from Plex to my Chromecast too, that might be worth looking into! For now I'll stick with the conversion (which annoyingly isn't working just yet haha).

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll check plex out soon.
