Being car owner for some 10+ years and having several models, I have been always struggling with decision about car model, when buying new (which one to choose so it doesn't fail me and gives decent comfort). Hence for existing and future car owners, give reviews of cars u have owned:
Code: |
1) Model with Year + Time owned + Milage from to
2) Comfort Rating (1-10), 10 being superb, 1 being shit
3) Driving experience (1-10), 10 being superb, 1 being shit
4) Maintenance Costs (1-10), 10 being low, 1 being high costs
+ any other comments
5) Fuel usage (1-10), 10 being low, 1 being high |
as for me:
1) Mazda 626 - 1999 - owned for 5 years - 120k-170k km
2) 3-4 - quite shit interior
3) 3-4 - quite shit performance for 1.8 petrol
4) 10 - 0 problems for four years, changed only oil few times
5) 8 - smth like 7-8l per 100km mixed environment
1) Mazda 6 - 2007- owned for 3 years - 80k-100k km
2) 5-6 - nothing special interior, loads of plastics, typical for Japanese cars
3) 4-5 - quite shit performance for 2.0 liter petrol
4) 8 - slight problems with lights (corrosion), all fixed, costs to maintain quite low
5) 6 - 10.5l per 100km mixed environment
1) VW Touareg - 2006 - owned for 2 years - 67-88k km
2) 9 - very well though comfort through interior and driving
3) 9 - v8 4.2 petrol, what more needs to be said
4) 1 - nightmare, all little features break down, and they cost million to fix, been left on road two times...
5) 1 - 18l per 100km mixed environment, 24l in city, in winter its cheaper by taxi....

1) Peugeot 307 2005/6 + 2 years + 70k to 115k give or take
2) Gonna go with 7 since it wasn't anything spectacular like mahogany or something, but what it had, was perfect for me, space for everything, and me being a big dude, this was an important aspect
3) Gonna go with 8 or 9 since the car was VERY responsive, but somewhat lazy, as most used diesel engines are (in my experience)
4) 9, cheap as fuck. For me, anyway.
5) 8, especially handy in the city, I always found Peugeot to be especially economic in the city.
1) Seat Leon 2006 - 1 year (currently driving) - 80k to 85k.
2. Same as the above, very spacious for my needs but could always be better. My brother in law changed the seating from leather to normal fabric since during summers it proved to be especially sweaty for the balls.
3) 7 to 8, I still can't quite get used to its back and parking can sometimes be a tad more difficult compared to the Peugeot.
4) It's a Volkswagen in disguise, so 2 or 3.
5) 6, I guess? Although the engine is quite big so there's that. Got it for cheaps when Kodak liquidated Romanian assets so there's that to compensate.

My current cars:
1) Honda Accord V6 AT 2007, bought in 2010, 28k km to 65k km (I just sold it though, will hand the keys next saturday!).
2) 7, very comfortable, extremely spacious (the car is huge...), +auto gearbox is great for traffic jams.
3) 6, I like driving it, the V6 is fast, but auto is kinda boring...
4) 10, it's a honda. Zero problems.
5) 16L/100km city, 9L/100km road.
1- Lada Laika 2105, 1995, bought in 2010, who knows how many km... i used it for about 20k km though, just "sunday driving" (going to dangerous parts of the city, rallying, etc).
2- It's a lada.
3- It's a lada. (actually very fun to drive cause I can be a maniac at the wheel, people give me funny looks when I'm in it).
4- It's a lada. Lots of small problems, cheap to fix, but there's always something else...
5- Usually around 10L/100km. OK for a carburettor.
Now my all time favorite:
Honda Jazz/Fit 1.5L, manual. It was spacious, relatively comfortable, very easy and fun to drive, zero maintenance, economical... One day I'll have another one, perhaps a type R if they ever make it.

Yaris sol 1.0
1) Bought in 1999, been using it since 2003, ~200k km (but it was reset at least once for reasons still unknown).
2) 10, you will feel like a pasha inside. The legend tells, sheikh Abu Abahdi owns one of these incredibly rare models and uses it to please his concubines on daily basis.
3) 10, you can fully trust her, no question asked. She never gives up on you, she never betrays you. It's powered by a prototype engine from the future specifically designed by Japanese engineers in cooperation with reptilians from Alpha Draconis. Speed is limited to 300mph for safety reasons.
4) 10, lol. You don't maintain her, she maintains you. The internal space works both as cryo-rejuvenation therapy chamber and hyperbolic time chamber, depending on your needs.
5) 10, again, since the car doesn't rely on human technology, doesn't need puny earthly fossil materials to function. Its perpetual self sustaining fusion reactor is the answer.

Would it be ok if I gave you a condensed version of the answers? Because there's a few and I don't remember all the details, or even most of them
1) 1992 Opel/Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 GLS
My first car. Had about 250k kms on the clock when I got it. Replaced the distributor, oil, sparkplugs, oil and fuel filter etc when I got it, and not much more after that. Neither of those were absolutely in need of replacing, but for peace of mind. Very easy to drive and pretty comfortable, if not very basic. 115 hp, 2L NA inline-4 engine. So not fast
2) 1995 Vectra GL.
A pretty low mileage, well kept car that I got from a relative. Never had to replace anything except a door lock, after someone tried, and failed, to break in to the car.
3) 1994 Vectra GT 16V.
The sports/GT version of the Vectra, with about 150 hp.
4) Volvo 740 GL.
Built like a tank, especially compared to the Opels. Pretty sluggish steering and worse fuel economy. But, it always worked and was a fun car for the winter.
5) Another Volvo 740.
Not much more to say, same car, only a different year. Only used as a winter car.
6) Volvo 940.
Another car for the winter. A more modern car than the 740, and extremely easy to drift, mostly thank to a very high steering angle.
7) 1992 Nissan 200SX S13.
My first "summer only" car, a stage 3 S13. It was very quick with its ~230 hp. But, it had a serious rust problem, something a young buyer like myself realized too late. Sold it later that year for less than I bought for. Spent a lot of money on it before that too, so yeah
8 ) 1999 Subaru Impreza GT. Loads of money was already spent on this when I got it, pushing 350 hp. Super fun to drive, great handling and everything. Not very comfortable though, since it was very stiff (but it paid off when you took corners ). But I still used it as my daily car during the summer. Fuel economy wasn't exactly great, being turbocharged with 350 hp, and constant AWD. But, I still loved, it, worked great, looked good, sounded great, etc. Only had to replace the mass air flow sensor, but that was mostly my own fault to begin with.
9) 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI JDM.
The japanese version of the STI, which had the 2L EJ20 engine, twin scroll turbo, equal length headers, adjustable center differntial and a bunch of other Japanese market-exclusive things. This I bought during the winter, so I used it through the winter and summer. Amazingly fun to slide around in during the winter! Had just over 300 hp, but it was a generation newer than my previous Impreza, so it felt better overall. Always worked and only did a full replacement of the engine oil and filter, plus the gearbox and differential oils. Just for peace of mind Pretty comfortable too, since it didn't have aftermarket suspension like the GT.
10) 1999 Honda Integra Type-R. To date, the most overall fun to drive car I've had. The engine was replaced with the 2L VTEC engine from the Civic Type-R, the K20A2 engine, and the 6-speed gearbox. Then it was upgraded and tuned to 250 NA hp (cams, ECU, intake, header, injectors etc). Then a fully adjustable suspension setup etc. Awesome handling, and an awesome sound since it reved over 9000 rpms. The only thing that failed me was the starter.
It was like a track car for the street, basically. Not very comfortable at all, since it was loud and stiff. Long trips weren't that much fun But otherwise, I loved it.
11) 1991 Mazda RX-7 Convertible. Obviously only for summer use too. 200-something hp, rotary engine, turbo aswell etc. Had some idling issues wich was a bit of a hassle. But it worked surprisingly well, and it was so damn nice going for a drive in the hot summer weather, top down, getting ice cream or whatever. It's amazing how so little can do so much Only reason I miss it, really.
12) Nissan 200SX S14.
The longest, biggest and most expensive car project I've ever undertaken in my life so far. Got the car with the previous owner having it built to 400 hp. Had something done to it on all areas, from suspension, to engine, to the exterior and interior. Had fun with it for a while, then I started having problems with it. Wouldn't run correctly, didn't pass the smog test which all cars here have to do each year. Couldn't figure it out at all. So, I rebuilt a big part of the engine - the head including cams, valve springs etc, the intake, turbo, header etc. Went to get it tuned (where you set everthing up and calibrate everything to achieve as much power as you can, while maintaing good driveability). The end result was engine failure. Totally heartbroken, I tore the whole engine out three days later, and started the road to doing just about everything from scratch, instead of relying on the work that previous owner/s had carried out. Replaced almost everything you could replace (I didn't need to replace it all, a new set of bearings and a new crankshaft would have been enough).
But I went with a whole new bottom end, a new head, new cams (again!), and new intake manifold, a new turbo, a new custom made exhaust manifold, a stand alone engine management system, big injectors (yes I mean big, 2000cc), new fuel system/pump, stronger gearbox, twin plate clutch, new wheels. I also converted it for use with Ethanol/E85 (hence the big injectors). Had the body vinyl wrapped, replaced the body kit with a clean looking aftermarket one..
It all paid off, because the car was first displayed at Scandinavias biggest car show, then I went to tune and dyno it (ie measure the power), and managed squeeze almost 700 hp out of the little 2L engine Then I totally destroyed some rear tires to celebrate. Still have the car, but thinking of selling it in favor of other projects.
13) 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX "STI" Wagon.
The wagon version of the Impreza. Started its life as a right-hand drive 2002 WRX, then had the 2.5L STI engine swapped into it, along with the left-hand drive STI dashboard for the correct position for our traffic. Was my daily year round car for three years. As with any Subaru, it had constant all-wheel drive, which is very nice, but also made it a little more thirsty than other, 2WD cars, plus it was obviosuly turbocharged. But with about 260 hp, it was at least very easy to do overtakes
14) 2008 VW Polo 1.4 TDI.
My current daily driver A bit of a difference maybe from previous ones, but keep in mind I still have the S14 I wanted a small, cheap but reliable car for daily use, and this is perfect. Extremely cheap to insure and tax, uses very little diesel and still feels nippy around town. And it's comfortable too. Only had it for six months so far, but I love it, does exactly what I was looking for when I got it. Very well kept with everything carried out by a certified VW workshop, pretty low mileage (100 000 kms). And it's RED! So it's very sporty, obviously.

1) Fiat Bravo 198 (2007) + Last June til now + 95.000, currently at 115.000
2) 8, quite comfy, but the seat does poke the right side of my butt a bit.
3) 7, really good, except I would've expected a bit more power from the 1.9Diesel. Still reaches 210 (which should be something like 200 in real) without any big hassle.
4) 8, changed oil once, front brake pads but will have to change the belt and water pump soon
5) 8, ~4.5-5.2 liter Diesel on average if I drive carefully (and mostly alone 90-100km/h), 6-6.4L on average if I push on the Autobahn and try to maintain 160km/h+ all the time. Because of traffic you stay below this number of course and depending on how often you have to brake, this number might be a bit higher, but on average it's always around this. With Diesel prices as low as 1.29€ it's really affordable, even if I go a bit faster

1995 Honda Accord bought at 100k miles owned for 50k more.
Not a bad interior for what it was. Great fuel efficiency. Shit for power but whatever. It did it's job.
2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Was a decent car when it came out and was reviewed well but after two years with the car it just had random problems and generally turned into being not that great of a car. Had 310 HP and made decent gas mileage, but just had weird fitment and quality issues.
2010 Mazdaspeed 3
Best car I've owned to date. Brought this car to England and drove it a total of 4 years. Good power, easily modded, decent gas mileage, and the interior wasn't bad for the price range. I highly recommend the Speed3/MPS.
2014 Chevy SS
Replaced the Speed3 as I was wanting more power and a better interior. The interior blows most sub $60k European cars away. RWD, LSD, and 420HP/TQ. Overall a great low volume car. Gets shit for gas mileage though. 13MPG here in Honolulu.
