Unity is a nice engine, but let's stay serious, Unity to rival Cry/Unreal engine ?
Well, it depends on what you are looking at. Unity is light years ahead of the CryEngine/Unreal Engine in terms of usability. I've worked with UE (and a bit CE) and it's not easy to start with something. With Unity you can have something up and running in a couple of hours. Yes, UE usually performs a lot better (Unity isn't that great, but luxery comes at a price), but that's pretty much everything. You can do nearly everything in Unity too (might require you to develop some stuff though), although the performance impact can be severe. But really, Unity is an awesome engine.
Hello everyone! As you all know, we’ve been making some big moves at Unity lately. We’ve partnered with some amazing companies and begun putting a lot more energy and resources into developing technologies that will help you be more efficient when you create games and then help you connect your games with an awesome audience when you’re ready for it.
This is a lot to take on as a company and building it right is going to take a huge effort. We keep our eyes out for the best talent and help wherever we feel we can use it at every level. That’s why today, I’m pleased to welcome John Riccitiello onto the Unity team as our new CEO. Sure, that sounds odd, as it also means I’m stepping down from the role, but this is an amazing win for Unity and the community.
He’s the right person to help guide the company to the mission that we set out for ourselves over a decade ago: democratize game development!
Many of you are likely familiar with John. He’s been in the games industry for a long time, both as COO and later CEO of Electronic Arts. He’s also helped fund and guide some notable startups like Oculus and Syntertainment among many others, and is a heartfelt believer in the indie scene and its importance to the overall well-being of the industry.
Riccitiello and Unity, what could possibly go wrong. Fully integrated online authentication and DGEs (downloadable graphical effects) incoming for all the Unity-powered games!
Still a lot of games maybe wouldn't ever come to be if not for Unity. And I'm talking Wasteland 2/Pillars/Torment/Dreamfall chapters. I'd rather have this games with some performance issues then not having them at all.

That ex-EA guy? Ok, at least we know for sure it's not about putting power into the hands of small developers, but money into the pocket of greedy suits. Wonderful move, Unity

Except for Dreamfall, all of these games could have been done in IE. No Argument for unity at all.

I dream of the day when all these engines will start to complete for performance and stability instead of shitty badly implemented features that requite 2xTITAN to witness.
Unity 5 will be free outside of a professional game development license at either 75$ monthly 1500$ for a one time payment.
(Which I guess is for "AAA" type developer studios and probably includes the tools needed for console development for PS3/PS4 and X360/XBO.)

But if you’re not, if you’re just getting started or just choose for artistic reasons to give your games away for free, or if you’re a hobbyist screwing around or a student, this is free. You get the full power of Unity 5 for free,” the one-time EA leader said.
“There’s no royalties, no fucking around. It’s simple. That’s really what we’re announcing.”
Riccitiello, calling Epic a “tiny competitor”, said Unreal Engine 4′s royalties scheme is like a free-to-play game, in that it hopes to catch “whales” to pay for all the free users.
“With Unity, it’s capped. It’s $75 a month or $1,500 for a perpetual license; we’re not nickel-and-diming people and we’re not charging them a royalty,” he said.
“When we say it’s free, it’s free. When we say $75 a month, it’s $75 a month. Yeah, you can buy other stuff from us. We’re not a one-trick pony, but we’re not charging a royalty, which I think is akin to looking for whales.”
