That's it... no more 7970. Somehow either a voltage reg or a component very close to it popped earlier, smoked and thats it.

PC still boots, but the display is slightly distorted and the heat of the regulators increases very quickly - card reboots the PC in minutes.

And because it was an XFX, there is no warranty when you use an aftermarket cooler... so my PC gaming days have come to a sudden and pretty definitive end.

Last 12 months or so have utterly sucked in one way or another hardware wise, and after using a 7970, I can't see much point in going back to a cheap card, once you reach 60fps in pretty much anything, 30fps just won't do.

Sad

Disturbing.

Can't you put stock cooler back and clean up the mess a little? Act all ignorant and such, and say it just blew while gaming?

I'd be trying my damnedest buddy, as what have you got to lose?

Get some circuit board cleaner (cheap as nuts) and clean the board around the blown VRM, spend some time at it, take a few hours if need be, get it looking good, and refit the stock cooler, worth a try Wink

I'm sure XFX will pass it, even for a used replacement.

**Edit**

Of course, you can go the 'other' route Wink, which is what I have done in the past, but does require money as an initial outlay.

Order another, exactly the same, but have full intentions of sending it back within the grace period (14 days here in UK).

Carefully swap boards, re-package, and change your mind for the refund Very Happy

Of course, this means some poor sod is going to get a duff card, eventually, lol, but they are covered themselves, so just an inconvenience to them really, so no sleep lost in the end Razz

XFX put void stickers on the screws holding the cooler in place, so that wouldnt work.

And I'm probably too 'honest' for the 'other' option Whistle me elmo

The card was a graded replacement for a dead 7950 - there is a small possibility the site might honour their 1 year warranty - but I don't think they will if I used a cooler.

Could always blame the dog and claim the whole PC on insurance I suppose... J Browman
