Quote: | Microsoft's on the, erm, threshold of something big -- something that's likely to make its three major operating systems even more similar. Queen of Microsoft leaks Mary Jo Foley has caught word from some unnamed contacts that the next major update to the Windows family is codenamed 'Threshold.' That name comes from an internal email from EVP Terry Myerson. The codename reportedly covers updates to Windows, Windows Phone and the Xbox One operating system, bringing even more commonality to the three OSes. The Threshold is title more than just a big abstraction -- it's actually borrowed from the original Halo game, following the Cortana codename the company adopted for its forthcoming personal assistant offering.
Among the shared, cross-OS features are single, unified app store and tool sets designed to further entice developers to create applications for all three. Naturally, none of the higher-ups at Microsoft are confirming the existence of Threshold yet, but Foley's projecting a spring 2015 release for the upgrades. |
Unified OS for PC/console/phone.
Unified appstore and toolset to build and buy all your favorite appzzz.

I've not heard anything independently about the product versions in Threshold. But I do know about a few changes that Microsoft is planning for what my sources have described as "the next version of Windows," which I assume is Threshold. (Though to be clear, they never used this name.) And they're big news.
They are...
Metro apps running in windows on the desktop. As you can today with third-party utilities such as ModernMix, the next version of Windows will let users optionally run Metro apps in floating windows on the desktop.
Start menu. After bringing back the Start button in Windows 8.1, Microsoft will take the next logical step in the next Windows version and make the Start menu available as an option. It's possible this will appear only on those product versions that support the desktop.
There's more coming, and some things still up in the air of course, but I need to verify them with others. In the meantime, I felt this was big enough to get it out there. When you combine this information with Mary Jo's SKU info, you can see that Microsoft is, if not moving forward per se, at least continuing to do the right thing and responding to complaints. And given the changes in the groups responsible for Windows, this wasn't a given at all. It's a good sign. |

Oh shit, I am intrigued. I am not necessarily against WinRT and the metro UI, if indeed they improve it and make it suitable for desktop.

just to clarify, the concepts in the article wasn't made by microsoft but from that 20 year old guy Machalani (afaik).
But if ms does something like that for 8.2 i might actually give win8 a try on one of my own computers (used it on my customers/clients computers but not on my own).

That's not an official design AFAIK, just a guy on the internet who made a mockup - if I recall correctly he isn't even a designer!

Same here, I got a windows OS, an android phone, and no console I play (well a ps3 for bluray movies and a hacked wii for kids). And they all work fine together for what I need.
I plug my phone in, htcsync copies shit..I put wii games on the external HD via USB on PC and they work..how much more unified do I need it?
And why are they pushing for a windows apps store? They had that game one for a while, saw how well that went. I mean is using a browser on PC to find the software you want THAT much harder than using another window they would give you?
Is it just me or does an OS with a 'apps store' feel like an OS version of a MMO trying to work in micro transactions? "Sure you bought the OS, but here a pdf viewer you can use in it, only 9.99 on the store!"
edit:wtf...the forum order is screwy..

Paul Thurrott says it's going to be called Windows 9, so let's change the title!
http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/threshold-be-called-windows-9-ship-april-2015?
Quote: | Here's what I've learned about Threshold.
Windows 9. To distance itself from the Windows 8 debacle, Microsoft is currently planning to drop the Windows 8 name and brand this next release as Windows 9. That could change, but that's the current thinking.
BUILD vision announcement. In case it's not obvious that the Sinofsky era is over, Microsoft will use BUILD to provide its first major "vision" announcement for Windows since, yes, Longhorn in 2003. Don't expect anything that grandiose, but the Windows team believes it needs to hit a happy middle ground between the KGB-style secrecy of the Sinofsky camp and the freewheeling "we can do it all" days that preceded that. As important, the firm understands that customers need something to be excited about.
No bits at BUILD. Microsoft will not be providing developers with an early alpha release of "Threshold" at BUILD, and for a good reason: The product won't even begin development until later that month. Right now, Microsoft is firming up which features it intends to deliver in this release.
Metro 2.0. Maturing and fixing the "Metro" design language used by Windows will be a major focus area of Threshold. It's not clear what changes are coming, but it's safe to assume that a windowed mode that works on the desktop is part of that.
Three milestones. Microsoft expects to deliver three milestone releases of "Threshold" before its final release. It's unclear what these releases will be called (Beta, Release Candidate, etc.) or which if any will be provided to the public.
April 2015 release. Microsoft is currently targeting April 2015 for the release of Windows 9 "Threshold." |

So not a free update then. Oh well. Hopefully it will be similar to the concept linked above by LeoNatan.

Yes, but some people actually use this as a basis for their "gnu/linux" rationale. They never put a single dime in buying a Windows, but it costs money!!! So it's not free!!!
