What is you opinion, my rig is 24/7, should I disable or enable HDD shutdown after 20min of not being used? I have 1 SSD and 3 HDDs.

I never liked it - creates delays when you just want to quickly do something after not touching your PC for a few minutes. Didn't approve of the sound of the drive always spinning down and up in those cases either. It happened often enough, since I often take short breaks or use my PC "in bursts" Smile

Also, I don't know if this was adjusted since then (I have this feature disabled on any fresh install since the early W7 days), or it was some issue on my end, but it would switch off some of the drives even when I was doing something. Like say I was watching a movie... at one point it would shut off the drive and the movie would freeze.

i always disable hdd shutdown. i think it's a horrible, hdd life time shortening feature only relevant for laptops (and even for laptops i would question its worth).

modern hdds already have too many power saving features that shorten their life span due to various spind downs, head parkings and whatnot, adding windows shutdown to the list is just asking for trouble.

I'm not sure keeping a consumer grade hdd spinning 24/7 is better? The MTBF numbers are always based on a 8h/day cycle.

actually powering on and off hdd is a lot more damaging to it than constant spinning.

My 500GB and 1TB drives are 3-4 years old now, and I have my pc on 24-7 other than reboots for updates, or power outages. Also I disabled the HDD power down, it was sooo annoying going to look in the drive, and waiting 5-10 seconds for it to stop giving me the hourglass and get to work. And they are both still going strong.

Takes more toll on your HDD to spin it back up and then let it idle down than it does to get it to spin up at windows start and just keep it going.

I use it on my NAS but that's it.
Had it enabled once on my PC and it was really annoying having to wait for the drive to spin up whenever I needed something from it.
