Hi all,
I've got a spare PC I use for LANs when mates come over, its currently running a q9550 @ 3.8 and a gtx 580 with 4 gig ddr2.

I've got about $300 (AUD) to spend on it and am just wondering what, if anything, would be worth using it on. I was looking at an fx 6300 or 8320 with M/B and 8gig ddr3.
do you think I would see much of an improvement with just the CPU and m/b upgrade? I've got another PC I've dedicated for my partner and she currently has an amd/ati 7950 sitting in hers which I could switch out for the 580 if I upgraded the CPU. my only catch is that she has her PC on a fair bit while my 3rd spare is rarely used in comparison and I'm just wondering on power usage of the 580 compared to the 7950. My own PC is bad enough so trying to also keep power lower but its not a deal breaker either way.

with all that, what would you guys look at upgrading if you had the $300 or would I just be wasting cash?

cheers!

The 7950 should beat the 580 if overclocked. (With a little less power usage.)

The fx 8320 will have an edge over the q9550 in Games that rely on mult-threading, but overall not worth the money imo.

Better save some more and go for an Ivy/Sandy-Bridge+mobo.

Or use the 7950 with Mantle. Cool Face

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
