I first heard about this new music genre and this is basically what I looked like when I checked it out on youtube:

So what is Djent? Well, first of all it needs at LEAST 7 strings on the guitar (8 is preferred):

And those are kinda normal. There are some sick sick djent-shit out there.

Low frequency math metal (meshuggah) mixed with fusion, industrial, melodic guitar ballad, synth, jazz, death, satan taking a dump etc....

I don't know what to make of it. Never been a math-metal fan (and don't ever mention a musical genre with any kind of core in it). This is...

I don't really consider it a "real" genre. Calling it "Progressive Metal" is enough for me.
Not to downplay the skill and inventiveness, I just don't think that the genre differentiation is necessary. My favourite "djent" album so far is TesseracT's "Altered State".

Well, it does have several common elements.. a lot of syncopated chugging on the 7-8 string guitars with ultra fat low strings, complex structures and some chaotic shredding. TesseracT isn't really that brutally "djent". The song you linked to is more like normal gothy rock/metal with some syncopation at times.

I just read the word "Djent" the first time yesterday when I was searching for sounds for my POD HD300 and wondered what it was.

As far as "genre" I don't really care one way or the other. Simply progressive rock or progressive metal can mean anything from Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis to Rush, Dream Theater, Opeth etc. This "djent" thing coming from "progressive/math/extreme/tech metal" has it's own (as listed above) specific traits as well as having been adopted by fans and bands alike (as well as opponents etc).

It's in any case nothing I'm interested in.

ive got just the guitar to play it with really djenty sounding new pickups. Too bad I dont find it too amusing when listened to longer periods of time. The 2:40 part on first link was pretty cool I admit. Ive tried learning a meshuggah song and the weird fucking time signatures really fucked with my head. At times it's too hard to find logic in them and I need some kind of pattern to play stuff.

i play in vildhjarta and it has sort of become trendy to pick on djent or claim you arent djent, we are 100% djent and i think anyone can hear that pretty quickly simply due to the guitar tone, and i guess thats what defines a band as a djent band

we started doing this type of music long before djent was a hit and seeing so many bands now wanting to distance themselfs from it is just silly, you are what you are, if you dont like it then change ^^
