I have always disliked Apple products, even more after the updated iOS retarded "for 8-year olds" themed visuals. But i will get Mini because of the retina display. Been using so much retina iPad now at work, browsing is just too awesome with it. iPad mini size is just perfect, especially now with the higher resolution panel (tho the price could have been less for 16GB model) .
just bought a 2013 nexus 7 so obviously not buying the new retina mini (which is the obvious product for me).
but when the little one gets old enough for a tablet I guess I'll get the ipad air 3 or whatever it's called then still see apple doing a better job on education than android...
I pretty much used my 2012 N7 for e-reading only and the jaggedness was hard for me to deal with. the ppi on the new mini is probably a bit overkill but at least text will be smooth
Yah I really liked that ad. Obviously knew where it was going right when it started but I couldn't figure out if they were gonna' pick up the iPad from behind or move the pencil to reveal.
the only thing i hate about this derp generation is : they name new better products not number wise to point what is lower and older but with a retarded new PR catch phrase name
Gingerbread then Android 2.3
KitKat then Android 4.4
and now this
at lest MS got theirs shit together and names theirs devices and products the right way , at lest in this generation, then the last one : Win 98 , win 2k , Win Xp now became Win7 , Win8 , Win8.1 etc...
I am waiting for performance comparisons between retina mini and Air.
Aren't they both the same? Same A7, same RAM, same everything except screen size no? The only difference is the iPad Mini Retina has a greater pixel density, at 326ppi compared to the iPad Air's 264ppi but since they're running at the same resolution the results should be identical. However, there have been benchmarks done between the Air and the iPad 4;
I suspect the mini A7 is clocked down quite a bit due to much smaller thermal headroom. Also, could be they slowed it down for marketing reasons - the retina mini costs 100$ less than the Air. Makes little sense to me to have the same specifications. If anything the retina mini is a lot harder to produce, so that should be more expensive. So I am waiting for a proper comparison. I am leaning for the retina mini, to be honest, even if a little slower. But only of a little.
Well the iPad Mini wasn't downclocked compared to the iPad 2, it was a standard iPad 2 in every way except size. I've not seen any full on reviews of the new Mini yet though.
Actually the iPad mini SoC was die-shrinked from the older iPad 2. Here no such process has taken place.
Your results are in, sir! ^_^ Seems like the Mini has been downclocked 100Mhz and that results in a 5.4% drop in single core performance and 5.8% drop in multicore performance.
Apple seems to have a very small number of Retina iPad minis available for sale at Apple Stores, and it'd appear that someone who managed to find one just ran Geekbench [$0.99]. The results are here, and the iPad mini with Retina Display scores a 1390 in single core tests and a 2512 in multicore tests. Comparatively, the iPad Air rocks a 1466 in single core and 2658 in multicore.
Keep in mind, while some people might find these results vaguely disappointing, it seems to still have the same 1GB of RAM. Additionally, the original iPad mini scored a 261 in single core tests and 493 in multicore- So any way you slice it you're looking at an incredible increase over the previous model. It remains to be seen how much, if any, real world difference we see between the 1.3Ghz and 1.4Ghz iPads… But I've got my money on there not being much difference at all.
Stay tuned as we get more impressions on the Retina iPad mini.
So torn between getting an iPad Mini Retina or the Nexus 7. Leaning towards the latter because of the better display and the price (€220 vs €390 is just ridiculous...heck, I can double the space on the N7 and it's still just €255), despite the fact that I do have a bunch of apps on iOS that I kind of don't want to lose. I want something more portable than my iPad, as I've found myself not really using it that much anymore because of that :/
Maybe I should just get the N7 and keep the iPad for the few apps that I do use :/
Well OS aside (since our opinions differ there ), that is the one reason I haven't made a decision yet. The apps that I do use, typically aren't available on Android. Note that those aren't games, the few games I give a shit about are in fact available on Android and I use my iPad for games maybe 5% of the time
Which is also why the weaker GPU in the N7 wouldn't bother me one bit. Both are more than fast enough to do what I use them for, so the hardware inside doesn't matter one bit aside from the battery. And there the N7 lasts longer while web browsing, while the iPad lasts longer for videos so....meh :/
And yeah, the display is quite poor. I thought they had finally figured it out, but nope, they still get it wrong on the Mini (again). Why not calibrate them to the same quality as the other recent displays
