I don't care if it's old, I can also emulate anything that's emulate..able
I was really in the mood for FFVII, but I know it inside out... then I tried Deus Ex and I can literally repeat most of the lines as they say them so that's no fun... I tried FFX (played it at release) but got bored of the linear way you progress through the story, I tried Shadow of the Colossus (never played it) but it kept crashing, I tried Xenogears (never played it) but the way the PSX models jump around/distort made me sort of sick... and modern games aren't doing it for me at the moment, what else can anyone recommend?
I'd love a JRPG more than anything but I only like a certain type; anything like FF7, FF8, FF9 does it for me. Persona, FFX, FFXIII etc do not. Something I can sink a LOT of time into would be great but there seems to be so many to choose from (especially on PSX).
Maybe someone here with more knowledge on it all can inspire me...

You're right, there are a ridiculous number of jRPGs for the PS1 - and it can be hard separating the wheat from the chaff. Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Wild ARMs 1/2, Suikoden 1/2, Legend of Mana, etc etc. I recommend going further back, to the SNES, or a bit forward to the PS2 one.
*Chrono Trigger. Everyone has to play this at least once in their life. Phenomenal game.
*Secret of Mana/Secret of Mana 2.
*Earthbound.
*Super Mario RPG
*Lufia 1/Lufia 2
and for the PS2;
*Wild ARMS Alter Code F. The world's only truly perfect remake - takes the fantastic PS1 original and makes it even BETTER.
*Grandia 2/Grandia 3. Holy shit, quite possibly one of the best non-Square RPG series out there.
*Kingdom Hearts 1/2
*Shadow Hearts series (Shadow Hearts, SH Covenant, SH From the New World)
*Rogue Galaxy
*Metal Saga (ignore the Metacritic score, it's excellent and well unappreciated)
The XenoSaga games are great too, but expect to put in an ungodly amount of time playing them - each part of the trilogy is an epic in every sense of the word.

Much like FFX but you can travel between areas freely and you gain access to a proper airship later in the game. It's like FFX "Done Right" and many FF fans consider it the real FFXI.

Unfortunately I can't help you with the jRPGs, but as for Shadow of The Colossus, try to see if you can find the right combination of settings here or here. The crashes that you're experiencing are weird though :/
Chrono Cross is incredible, fully deserving the ridiculous levels of praise it gets, but it's not as good as its SNES prequel Chrono Trigger That game is nothing less than a masterpiece, I really mean that. As for Rogue Galaxy and Wild ARMS? If you're unsatisfied by either of those I'll be astounded, simply astounded Also, don't be put off by the "real time" combat of Secret of Mana and its sequel, they may not be FF-esque turn-based but the games are no less amazing for it. Wild ARMS is turn-based though and while the original WA on the PS1 had FF6/SoM-style overland sprites for exploring, it switched to FFVII 3D mode for combat - the PS2 remake is full 3D and goddamn that music (except Zed's theme, the original was better)
Comparison between WA and WA:ACF;
(I guess the person recording WA had a dodgy CD because it goes nuts during the boss battle, heh)
~edit~
Oh yes, absolutely! Stay WELL clear of PS1 SNES ports. Same with Gameboy Advance ones too. The PS1 versions suffer from lousy loading times, constant slowdowns and lots of audio issues. Some of the SNES>PS1 games are merely ROMs bundled with an emulator so it's amazing that the PS1 could do it in the first place Definitely stick to the SNES, use SNES9x with the "cgwg-CRT-v5-flat.OpenGL" shader and it looks amazing The NDS version of Chrono Trigger is nice though, great speed and audio, but the iOS/Andoid one has a really unpleasant blurring filtering applied and it can actually end up causing eye-strain

Yeah, the "Flat" one adds really nice scanlines but without the CRT-style curvature. It's a personal taste thing, you may prefer the curves. There's a similar one built into MAME now, using HLSL (SNES9x uses GLSL), which gives amazing results on LCD panels and you can set the pincushion curvature there too.
Sorry but there's really not much of anything you can do to fix the visuals in software mode, enhanced res upsampling isn't available and there's only so much software-based AA can do :\ Have you tried running in hardware? Depending on how old your laptop is, you might be surprised, though I wouldn't expect Rogue Galaxy to run all that well on a latop as it's a very demanding game even on desktops.
As for Dolphin? The latest Dolphin versions are terrible to be honest, real regressions from previous and the new input plugin makes me want to rip my hair out. You can't use m/k *and* controller any more - you have to choose "XInput/0/Gamepad" *or* "DInput/0/Keyboard Mouse" - you can't have both and if you choose one the other stops functioning. To say this irritates me is an understatement to say the least. I don't know what magic sausje has performed but "0 issues" isn't anything I've ever heard of or seen in Xenoblade - and it's effectively unplayable now for me, thanks to the 1-3s pauses during combat when you execute skills and this is with OR without the texture packs. It's almost worth going back to the older "ICC Optimised" 3.0 and 3.5 stuff, though even they weren't perfect.
Which posts? It was based on what I could find on google at the time
It does run well, on my desktop anyway, but the controls... I even tried getting my Wiimote to work (I have a sensor bar) but it's all over the place. Then again if I could get the Wiimote to work nicely I'd be playing Skyward Sword My 360 controller is packed away so I couldn't try that.
Yeah the texture pack has a perfect setting for the 360 pad (and even replaces all buttons ingame with the correct ones for the pad).
Just have the "classic" plugin set for the extension and bind those keys (might even be easier for kb+mouse as well):

What is that for nonsense now? I run at solid 30 without a drop, EVER. Why is that suddenly "magic"?!
I'm using dx9 render with window size (1080p render) and 4x SSAA and have my iso image on the SSD (which is a known fact to help vs stutter as i showed AND quoted in the emu topic).
And fuck double post, thought it was edit and can't delete here >.>

It's not a "known fact" at all, in fact the only place that even mentions it is the Wiki and that's when dealing with the HD texture pack, but that's talking about periodic stuttering, not combat freezes which happen with or without the pack. I've put more time into this game than you have and I know how it ran on so many different versions of Dolphin it's not even close to funny - it's terrible on Dolphin 4.0 and was so much better on specific SVN builds of 3.5 and didn't have this aggravating combat hitching/freezing.
Yeah and that's what i mean, since i put the image on the SSD i have 0 stutters or freezes or what the fuck ever.. Why would i lie to you about that? What would that gain me?!
I am on older version 3.5-367 tho

I didn't say you were lying, I just think you're overstating how well it runs :\ Either that or you're just insanely lucky.
Was trying to fraps it for you, but with fraps my framerate drops below 30, so music gets all fucked up. However, it can still show you that it doesn't freeze or stutter in combat if you want some solid proof
