FINAL FANTASY VI for the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad is here!

FINAL FANTASY VI first debuted in 1994 as the sixth installment in the iconic FINAL FANTASY series. Innovations included the ability to play all the main characters as the game's protagonist, and to this day, its epic story intertwining each of their fates is still highly rated and wildly popular. The characters' dramatic performances are also highly rated, including the catastrophe occurring midway through, which delivers a particular emotional jolt to players.

With plenty of abilities available and the magicite system for controlling spells/summoning, players can develop their characters any way they want. This was also the first FINAL FANTASY game to include the Ultima Weapon, the most powerful sword of all and a recurring item in subsequent titles within the series.

Features
• All graphics have been painstakingly recreated, bringing the world of FINAL FANTASY VI to your mobile device for the very first time! Kazuko Shibuya, one of the graphics designers involved in the FINAL FANTASY series from the very start, personally worked on the main characters and supervised the recreation of the game's graphics.

• Square Enix's vast experience in A-list smartphone RPG titles has been harnessed in implementing intuitive user-friendly controls that make the game easy to play on touch screens. The battle interface has received particular attention, with a complete overhaul for use on your smartphone.

• This smartphone release includes the new magicites and events that were introduced in the 2006 remake.

• Some events have been optimized to be played with user-friendly touch controls.

Story
The War of Magi left little but ashes and misery in its wake. Even magic itself had vanished from the world. Now, a thousand years later, humankind has remade the world through the power of iron, gunpowder, steam engines, and other machines and technologies.

But there is one who possesses the lost power of magic--a young girl name Terra whom the evil Empire has kept enslaved in an effort to harness her power as weapon. This leads to a fateful meeting between Terra and a young man named Locke. Their harrowing escape from the Empire's clutches sets in motion a series of events that touches countless lives and leads to one inevitable conclusion.

-old post-

I'm not super overly happy about the reference to "sharpened, a la the recent mobile release of V" because V's mobile visuals were TERRIBLE. Redrawn sprites that ended up looking like some bastardised abomination from the worst RPG Maker title, I don't know anyone that thought these were good and worth changing from the classic pixel-art style. So if SE touches the gritty pixels of VI the same way they did to V, they're going to have a riot on their hands. Next to VII, VI is the most fan-beloved in the series. It is a shame it's not the 3D remake they teased a few years back, I'd love to see a 3D-style FFVI like III and IV.

And talking about FFVII "possibly"?

Quote:

The Legacy series won't necessarily end with VI, Tokita said, when we asked him if it could include VII, VIII, IX, X and beyond. "We are aware that we have tons of VII fans," he noted. "We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

~edit~

Info from Polygon, an article about SE defending the prices they charge for their mobile games.

http://www.polygon.com/2013/10/9/4821626/square-enix-defends-final-fantasy-mobile-pricing-not-ruling-out-more

Quote:

"Technology-wise it would be very difficult to bring a games like Final Fantasy 7 and beyond from the PlayStation era [to mobile] — they require a lot more memory and processing speed," he said. "It could be something that is possible within the next few years. But as for the actual development of it, we just have to see how well [Legacy collection] does."

Yes, because the average iPhone or iPad doesn't quite match up to the lofty and pantwetting power of the PSP with its amazing single core 222Mhz processor and 32MB of RAM. Wow. For crying out loud >_>

"Unfortunately, it's not that it's not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile," Tokita told Shacknews. "It's that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won't be able to contain the space it takes. It's over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years."

WHAT.
THE.
FUCK.
?

I mean, how clueless does any one person have to fucking be to go on RECORD and say something like that!? What in the WORLD was this idiot thinking? "It's over a gigabyte, phones won't be able to contain the space it takes" - forgetting for a moment about epically huge games like Infinity Blade, The Bard's Tale, or XCOM... we have the iOS port of "The World Ends with You" - a game MADE BY Square-Enix - that was ported to iOS by Jupiter Hand. Guess what the size is;

1GB? Naw.
1.2GB? Not even close.
1.5GB? Guess again chummer.
1.9GB?? Nope!

2.3GB. TWO POINT THREE. Apple has a DOWNLOAD limit of 2GB on apps, so games can't be larger than 2GB per download and none are at the moment, but there are quite a few that UNPACK to be larger than 2GB. SW:KoTOR is 2.5GB for crying out loud. Hell, if I'm not mistaken XCOM is larger than 3GB as well!

First screenshots of FFVI released and even though they are redraws and not the classic pixel-art sprites, I'm not terribly offended... yet Very Happy The sprites still have their CHARACTER and aren't looking like stretched RPG Maker anime shite like FFV remake did. There's a cartoon'y vibe to them though, especially the backgrounds, but still you can see that a lot of the detail has been physically redrawn rather than just upsampled, colour-corrected and then smeared with Sai - not to mention character, it's still there for now.

http://www.jp.square-enix.com/jf14/ff6/

Still no word on release date except "Winter" so that could either be next week (last week before Apple locks down the AppStore for the Holiday) ... or it could be anywhere up to March 2014, basically Sad My hope for a Christmas release has pretty much faded away but oh well.

~edit~

Oh and to be fair, the SNES version of the Imperial Palace above is quite heavily filtered. Here are comparisons between standard bilinear filtering and no filtering.

this remake looks amazing. they redrawn all 2d art but stuck completely true to original look. can't believe there are people who complain about it, what is wrong with this world.

yea i like what they did with it, obviously the art style can never stay the same when transitioning from a 320x240 game to 1920x1080, yet they managed to keep it remarkably in style and charming.

lets hope they dont fiddle around with the music.

squarepenis, where is my next-gen ff6 remake? So Much Win Sad

I take it you read the comments on LOLtaku and BoughtArcade then? People are going apeshit about it .. and while I would wholeheartedly agree if the redraws were to the same level and style of FFV, this just isn't. These redraws are beautiful and charming, maintaining the character and soul of the originals but repainting for the ludicrously high resolutions on iOS devices.

I do have to agree with Zeel though... it's the music where it's at. The GBA had *terrible* music for FFVI Advance and it was only a fanmade patch that finally fixed it, albeit in mono due to storage constraints. SE could really shine on the remake if they do the audio properly, perhaps like they did with Chrono Trigger and the 600MB+ soundtrack? Very Happy

The worst thing is they DID tease 3D remakes to FFV and FFVI too, going on about how the DS didn't have the power but they were looking at the 3DS for it. Heavy Rain was my "buy a PS3" game, Mass Effect was my "buy a 360" game, Final Fantasy VI 3D remake would be my "buy a 3DS" game Very Happy

just noticed this today, while I agree I'd prefer 3D remake,FFIV style,it's still looks better then the SNES version,I guess people should wait for the remake to come out to really judge for themselves .

Well that's your opinion. I disagree, I think they skewed and stretched the sprites from super chibi and trying to give them a more "realistic" perspective, just like in FFV and FFD, damages the asthetic and makes it look like a cheap imitation.

you know what would be great, if the game featured a remixed dubstep version of the ost,
it would fit the new art style.
