A sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller.

RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of the galaxy.

The AI Storyteller

I've always thought the best part of games like Dwarf Fortress and The Sims was the stories that come out of them. That's why RimWorld is designed as a story generator. It's not about winning and losing - it's about the drama, tragedy, and comedy that goes on in your colony.

To keep things interesting, the game creates events like pirate raids, trader arrivals, and storms. But these events aren't random. RimWorld uses an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story. There are several storytellers to choose from.

Features:

- In RimWorld, your colonists are not professional settlers
- Each character has a background that affects how they play
- RimWorld uses an engine that I originally developed to power a tactical sim
- People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment
- When a colonist becomes too stressed, they may suffer a "mental break"
- The flavor of RimWorld is a mix between hard sci-fi and the Old West
- The core idea in the RimWorld universe is diversity

Uhm, did they steal code or something from Prison Architect? Or is it made by the same guys. I mean, it looks a bit too similar at parts. Especially the characters.

It looks a lot like Prison Architect. What's up with that?

Blame my (Tynan's) lack of art skill - especially with characters. I made the character art you see in the trailer as a stopgap, and borrowed the Prison Architect style because I'm not a good enough artist to develop a new one. They were never intended to be final. With this Kickstarter, we'll be able to get a real artist who can sit down and develop an original style for RimWorld.

I've talked with the original Prison Architect artist, Ryan Sumo, and he's fully supportive of RimWorld. We didn't share any art or code with the PA guys.

@WhiteBarbarian

You have good reason to be hyped, this actually does look really good. I hope it's not as complex as PA (though that's not really hard to understand as Introversion are known for making complex titles Very Happy) but it certainly does sound good -- and you know what? I actually don't mind the art style, if PA are fine with the way it is I'd be happy to play like this. It's a nice bit of parity between PA and this title, even though they're not related. Introversion chose a fantastic style for PA, something that has charm and is easy to grasp.

That was crazy fast. Considering they added it to Greenlight just two weeks ago. Good for them. Let's see how they change the graphics to differentiate themselves from PA once kickstarter finishes.

Backed this already. Should receive pre alpha build when kickstarter ends Smile

Btw the dev of Rimworld asked the artist who designed the art for Prison Architect if he could borrow it. They are just placeholder till he hires a proper artist to do the graphics for Rimworld. I think they are doing that atm.

So when is this actually due out then? The tiers on KS say Nov'13 and Feb'14 ... but seriously? Four months and this will be done? That seems both awesome and slightly hard to believe Very Happy

From what i understand he'll release public alpha in feb '14. From that point he will focus on various features,
Anyway kickstarter is a success with over 250k (20k were needed).

When will the game be available?

The game works now. If you're in the influencer tier, you'll get access to the current pre-alpha as soon as the Kickstarter ends and we work out the payment and download details (which could take a few days after November 1).

I've run several playtests and verified that real people can pick it up and enjoy it. It is, however, a bit light on content, and there are bugs. I'd like to squash this stuff as fast as possible.

I think we can have the first more stable and well-rounded public alpha (with audio and art contributions) out in January 2014.

I just got a download link for what I assume is the public alpha, so other backers should check their emails. Smile

I didn't back this because I'm constantly broke as fuck, but I'll definitely do what I can to grab it retail when it comes out.. Well, after some content updates of course, unlike Spacebase DF9 which launched in a, well, let's just say anaemic condition.
