Quote:

Project Ara is happening and its happening fast, Google has taken charge of the modular smartphone project and is aiming for a January 2015 release- it won’t cost much either, with the standard price coming in at $50. That said, new modules and customisation options will like bulk up the smartphone’s price.

Google’s plans were revealed yesterday at the first Ara’s developers conference, project leader, Paul Eremenko explained that consumers would be able to buy the ‘Grey Phone’ as early as next year and is called the grey phone in order to encourage people to customise it. The $50 phone will start off as a basic device, it will then be up to the user to buy new modules to swap in and out.

I loved this bit at the end;

Quote:

Eremenko did comment on Android’s lack of dynamic hardware support: “It’s true that Android does not support dynamic hardware today,” he said. “The good news is that we’re Google.”

Very Happy

Nice idea, but as always i'm kind of skeptical. You buy this, and a year or 2 later v2 or 3 comes out. Slightly slimmer, larger or both and a year after that you might just not find parts for the old junk you bought. They talk as if things going wrong is the biggest problem with the mobiles these days, imo the worst part is peoples crawing for something new each time new models appear.

If the lg new phone leak stuff is anything to go by I would not mind that phone, it looks like they almost got rid of the bezel on that thing and it looks super fine because of it.

More info about Project Ara (née Phonebloks) and the components. The CPU/SoC and display are touted as being the most expensive components, $80-100 for SoC and $100ish for display, the rest will be cheaper and - aside from SoC and display - completely hotswappable too, coming as part of the upcoming Android "L" (Lollipop?) release.

Really!

I have high hopes for this project, it really does seem like it could be a breath of fresh air. It's never going to beat Apple or Samsung.. but it should be a fantastic alternative and I'm loving the modular design.
