So I was walking around a small town yesterday and saw a box out in the street. Glanced inside as I walked by and there was one of those super slim PS2s in the box. Snatched that shit up figuring it was probably broken and non-working. Plugged it in and to my surprise, the thing booted just fine. It even reads discs still!
I set up an original PS2 with Free Mcboot and USBLoader like a million years ago when I got the ethernet/hdd expansion thing...
But now I have this little slim gimpy thing. So my question is...
What is the latest and greatest for these types of PS2s? Obviously the thing doesn't have a hdd in it.
From what I could read, it looks like I can boot ISOs from an external usb drive formatted in Fat32 that supports USB 1.1. After that, things get fuzzy and it's hard to tell what it latest, and what is old info.
Here is the page I landed on: http://opl.sksapps.com/
Is this page filled with good info? Do I still need to rename the ISOs with that format? Do they still need to be broken down from ISO images? Obviously with Fat32 can't have >4GB images, but otherwise, do they need to be broken down into other format?
Is there better hacks out there than Fat32 drives + OPL?

I don't think much has changed in that regard, what worked a million years ago for your fat PS2 should still be the thing to use on this slim PS2. Either add a ext HDD or USB stick or, if it's not chipped, burn patched ISOs on dvds.

Sounds like you went all ghetto thug and stole someone else's ps2 slim. Think of poor little Timmy who forgot his box outside for 5 min. The same box he got from his bigger brother's old stuff, after he went away to serve in the army and was KIA a few months ago, and that box was all he had to remember him by.
There was a ton of other garbage shit in the box, like:
- 2 big rusty nails
- goofy plastic glasses
- an automatic fish feeder
- 3 flashlights, 1 still worked!
- a magnet
- a bottle opener
- 2 small glass bottles filled with dirt
- some other trash that was just various bits of something
A real treasure trove.
The PS2 did have a controller with it but most of the buttons no longer functioned.

hello there
here is your technical support from Hfric :
what type of slim is it ...serial number 70004 simply put series 700x can do mcboot
the latest mcboot is 1.8c.93B1 , with ULe v4.42b
mcboot is a loophoole hack that can run custom OS on your PS2 ... even Linux , Amiga KickStart etc...
Ule is a File Explorer or Browser or your Norton Commander for PS2 or Windows Explorer for PS2 ... simple put you can FTP with it , copy files from HDD to memcard , move files , Star Elf files [PS2 definition of a Exe file] , play games etc...
easy ... friend with a another MCboot
medium ... Swamp magic Original CD with burned Ule Boot CD that has MCboot Elf Install program on it + you need to mod your ps2 with tape to cover 3 sensors
hard ... Soft Mod Swamp with Cog swamp , you need a original game , a burned copy of this original game with modded files , tape 3 sensors in your ps2
Slims do not have a HDD ... but they have a 100mb LAN PORT .. hell YEAH fuck that USB 1.1 with its 768 kb/s when you can get 100mb/s from your LAn PORT all thanks to OPL , you can use a NAS external HDD or just hook up your PS2 to your Modem or HUB Spliter and send data from your PC HDD
New OpenPS2Loader version is 0.9
to play games from Media ... you need to patch them with ESR , latest loader is ESR beta r9b , latest patcher is ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a ... oh and dont forget to apply region hacks to fix color settings [Do this only if you play games IF YOU USE SCART/EURO/old cables to Tube TV you know composite cables... if you use a LCD/LED TV , F it.. those digital Tv decode your colors , oh and get a COMPONENT cable for those LCD/LED Tvs your image quality will go 100% sharper ]
the thing is some games work from OPL ... some dont [you have to play those from media], some have save errors when you play from HDD then you have to burn this game , patch it with ESR , play it from DVD [ESR only works on DVD ... CD ps2 games have to be converted to DVD format first to make them work] make them save , it will create a good save ... then you can play from HDD ... or you can get hdd save states from net and transfer those with Ule to your mem card so you can play games from HDD ...
about OPL HDD ISO format ... it uses USBExtreme disk format , a obscure program that was used to run games with USB ADVANCE ... now the latest is :
USBUtil v2.00 Full English with update DNAS Pack v2.1
+
USBUtil v2.1 Ultimate Rev 1.1, mayo 2010
it is a gui PC ISo converted to HDD, defrager, patcher , tranier cheat maker injector etc...for your PS2 games
the thing is it only works with FAT32
MAX FAT32 partition is 500GIG
simple put make a 500gig partition on your hdd with NTSC , use USB extreme to format it to PS2 format , USE USBUtil v2.00 Full English with update DNAS Pack v2.1 + USBUtil v2.1 Ultimate Rev 1.1, mayo 2010 to convert Iso and DVD to HDD Extreme format so your OPL can read those [why did i wrote those two programs well , some games can be converted by one other by the other one ... and for some you need USB Extreme converted and Daemon Tools to convert ... just ask ]
Free McBoot 1.9 (beta) has just been released and now supports the official PS2 HDD addon.
ok but from the things i see , its only for PS2 fats with Network Units that have HDD or silms that have the old motherboard which you could solder in a ide connector for your HDD
aka it is a HDD BOOT-enabled version of FMCB
but 3 things are nice , new DVD player code to make burned ESR discs read faster , making FMV movies play at normal speed , FMCB takes less ram making GOW2 and BOUNCER finally run faster...
So what was I using in my original PS2? It has the network unit thing + an HDD attached inside and it's been running fine all this time before this version?
I guess I don't know what that is either.. ;p All I have in the old one is the crap that gets loaded onto the memory card? HDAdvance I guess? And used uhhh.. HDL Dumb or something to FTP stuff over?
Is FMCB something I should have been using for something?
FMCB is a work around ... a soft hack that does not need chips to make the magic happen
the new version only came to be so it can be booted from HDD , then from your memcard
simple put it enables to boot FMCB strait from your HDD then your memcard
even more simple put : now you can FMCB that HDD on YOUR PC and insert it into PS2 to make it boot into FMCB [ONLY ON PHAT PS2 and OLD SLIMS that have IDE]
I guess I missed out on all this as it was happening. Why did whoever was working on all this stuff give up? I didn't think retarded 'scene drama' happened until PS3. ;p
/me hands sTo0z a MODBO 4 chip and a soldering iron
Nothing to it than an hours time for a trouble-free, patch-free, version-free, no-fuss good ol' pirated PS2 game time
I went through the same thing stooz about a year ago, well without the snatch&grab and being all thevie and whatnot of course when I had a PS2 for a few weeks.
Installed all sorts of stuff and McBoots..then after a few burns and forgetting to patch the isos I simply had it and went to buy a modbo4 chip for 4euros. Grabbed myself all the motherboard docs I could find, grabbed a screwdriver and had it soldered and laying infront of the TV in an hours time.
Worked off the first go
Then I put in my forgot-to-patch iso and was playing as happy as a smurf
MODBO crap , that burns your laser if you dont add the fix , fucked ups your board after a year [blows your transistors LITERARY ]... no thanks
but yeah its like two kids arguing one will say XBOX360 BURNED DVDS ARE THE BEST ... the other will say RGH IS BETTER no disks ... the other will scream BUT YOUR RGH CAN DO ONLINE ... RGH has FREE ONLINE BITCH ... and so on
tell me what a chipped PS2 can do then a Custom OS can't ?
FMCB can do emulators , can turn your PS2 into a media center that even PLAYS MKV !!! , can play games from HDD ...modbo can't do that it only makes the DVD/CD see all discs as original
tell me what a chipped PS2 can do then a Custom OS can't ?
Well there are upsides and downsides to both. Basically when I was in that situation I decided to mod because FMCB had to have patched ISOs and it couldnt play out of region discs and some hardware/games had issues i heard.
And the software approach was just more cumbersome than simply putting in a game disc and playing.
Also I think chipped ps2's can make use of media players as well, but I didn't even consider it since my TV can do all that on its own instead.
Nobody uses PS2s as media centres these days, that's just crazy Hfric The machine is used for gaming, non-ISO/MC homebrew was never a serious option on the PS2, the Xbox had that pretty much covered There's tons of work done (and still being done, see below) for ISO/backup support though. With that said;
its only for fats with hdd addon , the funny is they clearly say its just a FANCY GUI for GUI LESS OPL
just use OPL

is a demented lie that was spread when it came... when people bitched they cant play pirated games on CDs and must convert them to DVD ps2 format or use ESR DVD patched swamp magic to play CD PSONE/PS2 games
ESR is region Free and can BOOT any region games ,
and well back then people bitched like whinny bitches they have to patch games from PAL TO NTSC or the other way around to have color on they PS2
go into 2008 xbox360 era ... no one bitches no more they have to patch a image with SS+video sectors to burn , they only bitch they cant change regions now
