Destructoid: 9 (Darren Nakamura)

Quote:
On the surface, The Beginner's Guide is a game about game design and critical analysis. Digging deeper, it provides a window into the mind of a man I might not have fully understood otherwise. It does all of this in a way only a video game could. More than anything else, it has caused me a lot of introspection, a feat few games ever achieve.

Game Informer: 8 (Jeff Marchiafava)

Quote:
The Beginner's Guide addresses a lot of heavy issues in its 90-minute journey: Depression, loneliness, self-doubt, and the need for validation are but a few of the topics touched upon. Despite the inherent veil of fiction, Wreden's narration is well-written and feels honest. At the end, you're still left with the initial question: What can you know about a person by looking solely at their work? I'm not sure there is an answer, but trying to find it is a thought-provoking experience.

Rockpapershotgun: (John Walker)

Quote:
So did I enjoy it? Kind of. I think I appreciated it more than I enjoyed it, and then that appreciation was tinged with a wish that it could have been more. More clever, more surprising, more deep. But more importantly, it made me think, made me worry about people I care about, made me uncomfortable. And for that, I think, it deserves praise.

Gamespot: 8 (Edmond Tran)

Quote:
The Beginner’s Guide is an absorbing journey into the thoughts and processes involved during the creation of a video game. It succeeds in helping you understand and sympathize with game developers as artists and people. It equips you with important tools to perceive and think about both video games and other mediums in intelligent ways. It’s a game that lives up to its namesake--it’s the beginner’s guide to the meaning of video games.

Giant Bomb: 4/5 (Austin Walker)
Quote:
I can’t help but think that The Beginner's Guide is not the “sequel” that fans of The Stanley Parable may have wanted from Wreden. I also think that this game might be his declaration that he just doesn’t care very much about that fact. Regardless, The Beginner’s Guide does exactly what I want from a followup to a wildly successful work: It shakes things up. The Stanley Parable played with time and space, anticipating the player’s action and shifting to surprise, amuse, and fascinate. But with The Beginner’s Guide, Wreden doesn’t rely on tricks of level design to disorient or teleport the player. Instead he uses sharp writing and radical honesty to turn on the time machine we all have built into our heads already: The one that takes us back, over and over, to our most regrettable moments; the one that, years after the offense, leads us to sympathize with the one who did us harm; the one that tows us through decades of thought on long nights, locking us somewhere between productive reflection and unhealthy obsession.

Quote:
The Beginner's Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instead, it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand.

Great little gem if you're lucky. I enjoyed it immensely and found it a rewarding experience, but I can see how people just find it being a strange game.

Can't say that I enjoyed it at all (whereas I enjoyed The Stanley Parable immensely!)

I play games for the very reason that it helps me get away from my problems - not so that I can be thrust into someone else's or have to mull over my own ones while playing.

Maybe I missed the point of it entirely. Who the fuck knows. Regardless, this was not an enjoyable experience (and definitely not worth $10).

You're not alone Immunity, as a Stanley aficionado I went ahead and p̶l̶a̶y̶e̶d̶ pressed W it till the end, and while I can understand its existence, found the whole thing a tad too pretentious for my tastes. Okay
The Parable conveyed brilliance with its inspired design, this one on the other hand felt too personal so to speak, almost emo. Razz Laughing I'm probably just too grumpy to grasp this sort of stuff. Maybe I should play it again with vintage-framed eyewear on and red checkered shirt Cool Face

Yeah, no. I won't even insult my hard disk by pirating this.

~edit~

Never mind, this game wasn't by William Pugh, the person that created Stanley Parable, so no loss anywhere to be honest.

I found the game quite good. A decent exploration of how much art reflects the artist and also how much the viewer/gamer projects his own meaning onto a piece of art and thinks that that is what the artist meant. You know the old sometimes a painting of a bird is just a painting of a bird without any deeper meaning. Also, some of the levels had some interesting thoughts about video game design.

To conclude, it is not as good as The Stanley Parable but it is a good effort on its own merits. It is definitely not for everyone but nor is it "hipster thrash". Maybe I'm an idiot but I didn't find all that pretentious plus the narrative was quite good.

I do feel this is not really worth paying for. It really is more of an interactive essay/short story without any gameplay.

It's by ONE of the Stanley Parable devs, not the creators (Davey Wreden and William Pugh) and that Tweet was about D2D mocking a drunken abusive feminist that put out an industry-wide call, with all her SanFran dipshit journo friends, stating "gamers are dead, gamers are over, gamers don't have to be your audience" - well, D2D disagreed and it pissed off William. Two guesses who William's friend is? Laughing Oh and now that I remember, wasn't Pugh the guy that removed content from Stanley Parable when someone whined about it being "offensive"? Laughing

Davey the guy who made this is the co-creator of Stanley Parable, but yeah he's got some issues as evident from this blog post.

Supposedly he made all the maps, while Wreden created everything else- such as the game itself.

Thanks! It's hard sifting through all this stuff, everyone is "the creator of Stanley Parable" apparently grinhurt So Davey Wreden and William Pugh made Parable, and Davey Wreden made Beginner's Guide. Gotcha!

I'm confused. Why did Pugh get mad about that tweet? Was is somehow directed at him? It's a dumb quote but still everyone can make their own games if they so desire and publish them or not. I guess it was directed at the story of the Beginners Guide and Pugh got mad because Wreden is his mate? And yes, I think that both TSP and this game show that Wreden is a bit of a loony or at least a dude who thinks too much but I found the games entertaining and interesting so whatever.

Because it was taking the piss out of something one his drunken loudmouth friends posted. She, at the time headline a website about the games industry, put out an op-ed telling the world to stop thinking of gamers as their audience Laughing It's all about the GamerGate stuff, basically. She's a friend of William's, he saw the D2D pisstake tweet as an attack on Leigh and a validation of #GamerGate, who he believes "very nastily hurt" his friends.
