I reinstalled it last week, such an awesome game. Everything's fine with GOG release (just make sure to select rOpenGL otherwise there are problems with the menu). In 1080p it's a bit stretched, but very playable.
A bit? Nah, it's quite a lot, which is quite a no-go for me. I think I'd rather play with the black columns. Also, if anyone has the same problem I had some time ago with the mouse movement in it (it was really fucked up!), just force vsync on from the driver.
This was a Dark Souls of it's time. Fantastic game. Loved it and was scared of it as a kid
Somehow I've finished it... WITH A JOYSTICK (yes - a flightsim joy - don't ask )

Yeah same here.. I ended up limiting the framerate without forcing the vsync because I had some weird jittering/stuttering. It took me a while to figure it out, but now the sensitivity is ok.

Also, lets see you dark souls wannabes learn the controls in this game
enb is terrible. wow.
The vanilla game still looks good but that enb bloom is laughable imo

Since the game is no longer available on gog, what is the latest proper gog version to look for?
There is "setup_blade_of_darkness_2.1.0.8" about 460mb.
But there are also few 700mb older versions. Any ideas?

Yep, the 2.1.0.8 should be the most recent one (it's still installed on my laptop ), just configure nglide and you're good to go. Shame about that silly dispute with Coderpmasters, it's tricky but here's hoping this amazing gem can be brought back in some way.
“Since its initial launch, Blade of Darkness continues to build a dedicated following — mods, ‘Let's Plays’, and community patches are found throughout the gaming community even today. This only signals how undeserving was the game's fate,” said Elena Roor, Managing Director at SNEG. “I'm glad that we've managed to sort out everything legal and, to our luck, unearthed the source code with the help of the original dev team. Altogether this brings us to the upcoming October release.”
Modern Brutality: Blade of Darkness has been re-engineered to shine on modern PC hardware and operating systems, including widescreen support up to 4K resolution, new display settings, and overall stability improvements. The gameplay content and story are untouched — featuring all the original game’s quirks and charm.
An unexpected remustard, but proper widescreen support would be an improvement over what we have. Mouse controls could use some tweaking, too, since they're a bit on the rough side. As for the visuals, judging from the Steam page the new version looks untouched in that regard.
Nevertheless, the experience as a whole holds up surprisingly well both in terms of complex level design free from handholding and combat with its challenging mechanics, one could say it's some sort of Dad Souls. The real-time shadows and water effecs were cutting-edge back then, not to mention the dismemberment system which is still damned satisfying. Good stuff.
The Steam version just received a pretty big update:
Quote:
- upscaled textures (thank you for all your help and support SrRaulCL)
- bug fixes for the game’s save system
- reworked camera with the ability to freely look around outside of the combat
- better controller support
- new visual features: improved anti-aliasing, HDR, bloom, SSAO, motion blur
- massive patchwork across the game
- SteamDeck support (pending Valve's approval)
- console versions release
