I don't have a lot of understanding about this, but I know a friend that uses an i3 as NAS. He used to have an Atom, but it was terribly slow. Might cost a bit more though
nas are external HDD that can be use as your second hdd but the magic in them back in the old days before USb 3.0 was they where faster then USB2.0 , all goes though LAN DUH and they could act as a self sufficient server , FTP , seed box etc...
