There really isn't a reason not to. Should make text look better and make it easier to read.

I dont see a difference when its applied in FF.

A quick search turns up yellow lights. Support still looks buggy.

Hi mrt,

Thanks for taking a look.

I think the problem is the font used on Windows. But on a Mac for example, the Helvetical Neue supports kerning and ligatures to improve legibility. And from what I know, we do not have the nested hierarchies that are known to cause bugs. It should work well on applying it on the body of posts, and should not cause problems on basically any modern browser. Smile

BTW, if a forum upgrade is coming, perhaps it is time to change the Windows font? Very Happy Nothing crazy, just some better font on Windows.

True that, and we already improved the font on OS X to use Helvetica Neue. But on Windows, it still uses Tahoma or Verdana. Sad

Nah, don't really care about the font tbh. Aslong as it's readable and not some hipsters implementation of a hip font, they can either keep it or upgrade it as they please

Segoe UI+Calibri would give very good results in Windows. For one, they are properly hinted, so any modern browser would render them very good, whether small or larger. Smile

There's nothing wrong with a webfont like Open Sans if the font is large enough

Example with font applied: http://www.coflash.com/stuff/opensans.png

Plus that way you will mostly have a consistent font between most operating systems. Arial/verdana/tahoma/sansserif are boring. Open sans + museo sans + PT sans show up pretty well.

I wouldn't use anything below 15px - 16px for body copy these days either, or the (em/rem equivilant)

Support shouldn't be an issue either so long as it doesn't affect something else in a negative way, graceful degradation, if people want to use old shit they get an old experience to match

That looks terrible, way to blurry.

Oooooh, I LIKE Open Sans! It's a lot better than Pale Moon's default bullshit, the font and font rendering on here is horrible Sad Large, pointless, spacing between characters and the text is indistinct compared to the clarity of Chrome, not to mention some sites have thick unsightly fonts now, such as SteamGifts.

Chrome vs Pale Moon

 Spoiler:

I even messaged Garus about it a while back, thinking he might have some ideas on how to fix it. I tried disabling/enabling 2D canvass and it helps *slightly* with spacing, but doesn't fix font legibility at all. PM is using the same font and size as Chrome, it just looks horrible :\

Chrome vs Pale Moon

 Spoiler:

I've "gotten used to it" now but still not happy, not at all Sad

I don't like Open Sans. It's too wide. Why in this day and age, where we have quality displays - high DPI, pentile bullshit going away, we need a font so wide and so much spacing between characters? This is an outdated font. Even Google is stepping away from the Droid/Open Sans with Roboto, but that's just Google's Arial. Why does it have to be Open Sans?

Because that is entirely irrelevant as to why letter spacing matters. Line height and letter spacing are the two most important parts to make it easy to read text; and having little to no space is just as bad as having too much of it.

Having higher DPIs does not mean text with little letter/line spacing is easier to read. Doesn't matter much to you perhaps, nor does it to me, but for dyslexic people it matters a great deal. And even you do like a bit of letter spacing Leo, you're using SCP which does have a fair bit of letter spacing - it's one of the reasons it's so pleasant to work with Wink

This is a forum, legibility is more important than looks.

I do, of course, but I think Open Sans is too loose, and it is not to my liking. I think it is liked mainly due to its license type, rather than aesthetics.
I would argue that line spacing is much more important and could help here more.

I am using SCP? Scratch Head

But high DPI helps because shapes are much easily distinguished by the eyes. That is why you can allow yourself much lower weights and kerning (which effectively tightens letter spacing) and still be able to read with easy, things that were just not possible on old displays (pentile especially).
