One hundred years prior to the beginning of the story, giant humanoid creatures called Titans (Kyojin) have forced humanity to retreat into a system of concentric walls known as Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina.
Inside these walls, humanity lived in peace for one hundred years, but...
Episode Count 25/25 - Season 1 Complete
It's extremely popular and one of the best animes of all time imo. It's production values are through the roof. The music is amazing, as is the story and the drawing and the characters are all likeable as well, at least to me.
I'd suggest not watching a trailer or anything because there's a lot of twists and huge bombs that'll just blow your mind.
Most trailers show too much and would reduce the enjoyment you get out of having that stuff revealed when watching the series.
Also considering the manga is much further already than the anime, there are a lot of potential spoilers out there. Be careful, if you care.
Now go out and grab this because it's amazing.

Premise sounds quite interesting; must add this to my HUGE list of pending anime
Truth be told, I have yet to come across a series as wholesomely entertaining as FMA.
I have watched 13 episodes of this. It started off good and intriguing, but now is just cheese on top of cheese dialog.
Moreover there is ~ 3 minutes of recap + 2 title music + 3 ending credits, which leaves the actual episode worth to 8-10 minutes ( and most of that is filled by abysmal dialog towards the end of the season).
Action, premise, audio is this shows strengths and they should concentrate on this more.
Watched first four episodes. I must say it's pretty cool.
You were able to stop watching at the end of episode 4? Oh god dat cliffhanger..
No. I continued to watch it. I burned through those 13 episodes so quick.
I love this anime! So good, actually makes me feel something while watching it.
Been reading the manga since quite a long time ago, its pretty good, sadly ive never returned to anime after i started reading mangas. Its just so much better.
Good to hear that, i was so dissapointed when i watched Full Metal Alchemist and was like... hmm WOW, then saw the manga and i was shocked to see how different it was from the anime, since then ive never preferred animes. Will probably get it to see it in motion
I think technically it's Shounen because the manga was published in a Shounen magazine..
Doesn't really matter though, it's not for kids if that's what you're worried about :-)

Have you read all of the manga? If not you should really consider checking out Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It follows the manga (or so I've consistently read, I've not read the manga so I can't say). In my opinion it's superior in every way to the first Fullmetal Alchemist. Faster pace, better animation and production values, better story and dialogue as well. And after that there's even a very good movie to watch (but do watch it after the show) released 2011: http://myanimelist.net/anime/9135/Fullmetal_Alchemist:_Milos_no_Seinaru_Hoshi
Ahh yes, i read the manga completely before brotherhood came out, but by then i was soaked completely in the story so i didnt bother hehehehe, i already knew all the details.
Great show, I haven't been into anime recently. I went from watching tons of shows a year to watching 3 shows in the last 2 years or so, 2 of which I haven't even seen till the end.
I saw 14 episodes of this in a day and I like it. Dramatized for effect? Sure. Cheesy? Sure, in parts, all anime has it if cheese bothers you all anime will bother you. With that said this seems to be one of the best anime shows recently and if it continues well till the end will be definitely in my top 10.
and god damn this aint no shounen. too grim for that.
as for recommendations:
gantz and claymore - latter episodes gets weird cause they caught up with manga and made the endings up. still both are top stuff
samurai champloo - much more light hearted stuff and not adapted from manga, one of my favourites
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood might be up that alley too
half of it was based on manga which was very good imo, but then it invented some lame shit and it went downhill. the manga was very good till the end which kinda ruined it, but if i mange to block it out of my memory it's still good overall.
What? This shit had episodes based on a disco robot alien, and an onion family.
The onion kid was screaming TAKE MY ONION TAKE MY ONION right before being shot in the face. Quality writing right there.
How is this shit good??? What the heck have you been smoking?
they were some weird ass aliens, thats all if you read the manga youd know it would expand from this "focusing on different aliens and killing them" stuff. Of course it had flaws and some parts were kinda badly written, but still I enjoyed it very much.
well, after the first few episodes (which were great) the show seemed to go into a downtime, but only for a very short while, the new arc is as good as the beginning and especially the last few eps have been riveting.
thats great, i ve been thinking about reading the manga, but decided to stick to the anime version because of its more consistent art style, great ost and generally high production values.
