The GM is out as an appstore as update if you had a beta installed, and can be found as a full PKG download on the internets.

----------

They finally are doing advancements in hardware accelerated scrolling on the desktop OS, scrolling is amazingly smooth. Battery life is really great. I like the advancements they make with the desktop OS. Much better than Oneshitfitsnothingsoft. I was in a mall here on Market st. and there is a Microsoft store. My god what a shit. Everything is fucking squares... Laughing

Paul, I know you like OS X. Upgrade to Mavericks, it is really worth it. I haven't even seen a bug yet.

Think I'll wait for final, with the amount of work going on I can't afford to lose even a single day right now Smile

Finally having timer coalescing should be good and I'm looking forward to the finder tabs. It's a much better update than ML at least Laughing

Biggest thing though are USB hard drives, I hope they fixed the bugs with that. I'm not alone in it, tons of people who've got their disks randomly not being mountable after boot or sleep all of a sudden. Then you go "repair disk", it fails, you hit it again and it mounts it near instantly. Really fucking annoying.

And there is another big thing. Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is being deprecated in favor of Server Message Block version 2 (SMB2).

Saw that, but I was under the impression it's only for sharing stuff SMBv2 is default now; internally (i.e. their NAS stuff etc) AFP is still preferred? Would make sense, since a lot of people will have a Windows PC or Android device as well, SMB is the way to share with those.

I damn well hope SMB performance goes up as well though. There's a few tweaks you can do to make it quicker (most notably browsing), but OS X's implementation is weak to say the least.

Yep, but Mac to Mac will be SMB2 too. From OS X Mavericks Core Technologies Overview

Quote:
SMB2 is the new default protocol for sharing files in OS X Mavericks. SMB2 is superfast, increases security, and improves Windows compatibility.

• Efficient. SMB2 features Resource compounding, allowing multiple requests to be sent in a single request. In addition, SMB2 can use large reads and writes to make better use of faster networks as well as large MTU support for blazing speeds on 10 Gigabit Ethernet. It aggressively caches file and folder properties and uses opportu- nistic locking to enable better caching of data. It’s even more reliable, thanks to the ability to transparently reconnect to servers in the event of a temporary disconnect.

• Secure. SMB2 supports Extended Authentication Security using Kerberos and NTLMv2.

• Compatible. SMB2 is automatically used to share files between two Mac computers running OS X Mavericks, or when a Windows client running Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 connects to your Mac. OS X Mavericks maintains support for AFP and SMB network file-sharing protocols, automatically selecting the appropriate protocol as needed.

AFP
The Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is the traditional network file service used on the Mac. Built-in AFP support provides connectivity with older Mac computers and Time Machine–based backup systems.

Ok cool. Well hopefully that does indeed mean they implemented it better. Just a better standard config already makes a huge difference.

The improvements in Mavericks are not visual. It's what it does with scrolling prefetching, CPU optimizations and other tricks to boost life of my laptop that I am excited about, not bullshit like Maps and Books, or Calendar.

No mate, I'll be putting that off until November. I'm literally gonna be either travelling or working every week and weekend for the next month or so, so I don't want to even risk anything going wrong with the update; I know the chances of that happening are slim (the Powerbook I have here failed its 10.5 update 3 times though, grey screen boot loop Razz), but I can't risk the downtime right now.

So as much as I'm dying to install it, I'm just not gonna right now. I'll always have my Time Machine backups to fall back to, but then it's just going to annoy me because I know I need to get shit working ASAP Very Happy

Yes! Very Happy

Don't you remember my awesome fix for Apple's shit hinges on that thing? Used hinges off a small wooden door panel to fix the fucker, glue some plates to strengthen the display - Powerbook fixed!

I'm sure the pictures are somewhere in the hardware section Very Happy

Well that was ages ago, I didn't do that recently Razz

And couldn't go beyond Leopard because a Powerbook = PPC, so SL isn't supported anymore Smile

Mavericks runs perfectly fine on my Frankenmac. And with Clover as bootloader supports the Intel 4000 just aswell as the 7950. Smile

It even runs fine on my 11" 1.6Ghz C2D MBA, good thing I took 4GB Ram at the time.

So OSX 10.9 Mavericks will be free for all Intel Macs starting with C2D (64bit).

Good move by Apple.

Did the upgrade last weekend, I shouldn't have.

Minor annoyances as I can easily avoid them: plugging in monitor while it's booting sends it into a grey screen. Letting it go to sleep while on the login screen (because I pushed the button and went to get some coffee) also results in a permanent grey screen.

Major annoyances: Apps crashing much more frequently and a lot of them struggling to remain responsive (fortunately none of my essentials Neutral). It not remembering what fucking display I left an application on after shutdown.

At least I haven't had issues with Wi-Fi like some of my colleagues, nor do I use Apple's Mail with GMail Laughing

God damit. I came back to mac trying to stay away from gaming (yet again for the 100th time) thinking that whenever i need a fix i can start up guild wars 2 and play that since they have an osx client... but ze fps is 2 times lower Sad Crowded areas with 100+ players where i used to get 30 fps just enough to keep it playable went down to 15 fps.. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Sad

I have a question about app switcher(alt(cmd)+tab). Is it possible to hide apps from there. I want to hide apps like skype or other that kind which usually sit on taskbar anyway and i don't want to cycle between them when they are open. In Windows when they are on system tray(little icons near clock) they don't come up with alt+tab. I have googled it, but came up with nothing.

That's because on Windows it's a window switcher, while on OS X, it is an app switcher and these apps are running.

Check out HyperSwitch for a windows switcher.

Thank you! It is so much better, at least for me. I don't like appswitcher, i don't like that when i close current window or when i minimize it it just brings up app task bar and not the minimized or closed window again(same as if i would click it on dock again).
I know they are 2 different things, but i don't understand why apple uses appswitcher in its current form, they should at least allow to customize it, but i guess that is not what they are known for Razz .

Thank you again, this HyperSwitcher does exactly what i wanted. Smile
