I have a Dell monitor with a displayport. I currently connect the PS3 to DVI, but I have to switch cables all the time since the PC is connected to DVI also. Is it possible to buy an HDMI to displayport cable and use that? I've read on some forums that won't work and that an active "HDMI to displayport converter" is needed. Those are very expensive though (35+) and I don't quite understand what "active" means in this situation.

So, is there a cheap (max 15 euros) way to connect the PS3, via HDMI, to a displayport?

No, you need an active one. Timing is different on the two; electrically compatible, apart from the clock.

Don't you have DP on your videocard?

Can I just buy some random noname DP cable from anywhere, like I do with HDMI? Any reason why DP cables are so pricey compared to HDMI?

Because it is still relatively unused; most people don't know it can carry audio as well for example (it is in fact a full blown, cheaper alternative to HDMI so I don't get why it's still so uncommon).

Brand doesn't matter just like with HDMI. Digital signal, so a better quality cable won't do anything. At most a more expensive cable will be less likely to break.
